Any progress on the game? Not in a hurry but i would love to hear some progress.. Thanks :)
As per above, we're making progress but not quite done yet.

Playtesting is that weird time where we're playing it and fixing bugs and making sure all the string wrapping is correct, but can't really say with certainty what the remaining % of work is. Everything is translated, but we want to make sure you have a *playable* game and that all the riddles and puzzles make sense without having a translated version of the Magic Master book (other than what is there in the PS3 PDF you can find online for spell names and drawing order).

@Anjiera Hi! I've been on this thread for a while without an account and just couldn't resist the urge to post something! I've been looking for a good translation for such a long time, as I don't have a PS4 to play the revamped version. I understand that translation on such a dialogue heavy game will take a while but I was just wondering about a couple things.
  1. Will the cut scenes have the Japanese voice actors, No voice actors, or New English ones (Like Ace attorney investigations had with the voice clips) I don't mind either way, just kinda wanted to know.
  2. Is it a direct translation or a localisation with new jokes to replace the Japanese ones and such (again like Investigations)
  3. And finally, do you have any sort of time-frame for the date that this will be released, I don't mind how specific or really how long the month, the half year, heck even just the year would be okay!
Hope I didn't come across as rude, could never do somethings as hard and cool as you are, and don't mind if you can't answer any of these questions! Thanks so much for making this, I'm super excited for when it does get released.

Thanks again!

I can answer this one.

That patch will keep the japanese voices, for (at least) two reasons :
1. it would be illegal to provide another game's english voices in a patch, Anjiera didn't create them. it's possible to do it legally, by requiring end users to have both games and extract voices themselves. (not easy)
2. not all English voices are available (some NDS has dialogue which are not on PS3 version, and PS3 has some which are not on NDS)

there's no expected release date.
the usual "it will be released when it's done" is always the best answer for fan projects and translation/development.
it's expected this year, and it was said "before this summer", but as always it could take more unexpected time on debug phase.

But... aren't even fan translation patches considered illegal in most countries? Like Type-0 translation has been shut down by SE(though eventually released later)?

they released the translation in an already patched ISO format (providing game for free!), instead of patch format for the user to apply on their own legally bought games.
Also, square enix announced they would release that game officially in english, which was interfering with their legal plan to brought the game in USA/EUR, but the team rushed it to release it anyway knowing SquareEnix plans.

sometime companies announce an official release and the fan project is stopped by respect, or companies just ask the fan team to stop working on a project right before the patch release. it's hard, but it's their right, and it's too bad for all the effort and time spent by the translation team, but it's "part of the game". we have to comply.

As long as you don't provide a file or data you didn't create, it's in a grey area where the owner doesn't take action. (most of the cases).
but officially, it's illegal to translate something. subtitle of movies or TV series are illegal, translating any sentence is illegal if you don't ask the movie, book, game, art, or anything's author first.
Fan projects are "tolerated" on hacking websites as part of the "no shared data you didn't create yourself" rule. That's not legal agreement, but there's no legal action taken by companies unless officially requested with a Cease and desist letter. It happens, some translator groups already received one.
Let's hope English ni no kuni will not get one, as Spanish version didn't get one either.

I'll not answer more about fan project legality in this thread, let's keep it clean and on topic.

Yes. It will work on emulator and you also will (be? my english is awful D:) need a original rom to patch it when patch is out.

We're playtesting, as I said, and I'm currently playing on Desmume on my computer, on DraStic on my android phone, and on my R4 card on my DS. It works fine on all of them.

We will be releasing a patch file and it will contain instructions on how to patch a JP version of the ROM which you can get via ripping the game yourself, or from your favorite rom site. I don't think it is possible to patch the original JP game cartridge, but we still encourage you to buy the original game because it supports the creators (Level5) and because it really is a beautiful package of game materials. You can often find it on sale for USD $20-30, so definitely worth it.

For a more general update, we're still having issues getting some of the battle graphics to import. It was fine for a while late last year, and then the last few builds we've done we've had issues getting them to import properly. By that I mean that we *think* they got put into the patch file, but when we play the game it is the original untranslated graphics. So something weird there. We have to try to remember what magic incantations we were using to get it to work in the past. :S

Otherwise, playtesting is going pretty well, and we're working the kinks out of things and making sure that it is playable using the PS3 PDF of the Magic Master book. It is a 60+ hour game, so playtesting takes time especially when you're playing through an area multiple times to make sure things have been fixed properly when the next build comes along.

Thanks so much. Test is very boring. I know.
