It's partially translated but it got to a point where Google Translate and Babelfish couldn't figure out even a glimmer of what it meant.
So this is a machine translation? Which means when you get to the story it's going to be filled with errors? I mean no offense, of course.

A more apt description would be that I'm localizing the game. Since I don't speak a lick of Japanese, I need to use Google Translate or BabelFish to help me understand what they're trying to say, then I come up with my own way of saying it in English. Almost every string when directly translated does not make sense (or is just odd) in English since the grammar, syntax and especially idioms are all very different.

A few examples:
Bumblebee Land = "Hachihachi Land", Hachi translates to "Bee", so to me "Hachihachi" sounds like a nick name for a bee, which to me has always been "Bumble Bee"
Fashion Land = "Chokkin Land", I think it most closely translates to Scissor Land, which I decided would either be Barber Land or Fashion Land since all the props are barbershop related. Fashion Land sounded better.

The game titles are taken from Rhythm Heaven WIki which uses localized translations from the games that were released in English as well as the direct translations when a particular mini game hadn't been released in English.

The only two game titles that I changed (I think) are "Heartbroken Bear" (now: "Depressed Bear") because of the text being too long to fit in the little bubble, and "Hole-In-One Lady" (now: "Hole-In-One Women's League") since the direct translation doesn't sound right.

Sorry if this isn't what you're looking for in a translation, but it's what I'd prefer to play rather than a direct translation that I can read, but doesn't make sense. After I'm done with this project I'll be writing up the dev process with the tools I wrote so you or anybody else can go and do it another way (or another language) if you decide you don't like my version :)

I think you're doing a good job, but the tutorials feel a little awkward. I think they're an important part of the games that help to give you a certain feeling about them, and the translations currently being used seem a bit lacking in character. What about using official translations for the tutorials for the games that were in Rhythm Heaven on DS and Rhythm Heaven Fever?

So how long do you think it would take till your done?

Estimations are dangerous since slipping makes everybody angry, so I'll say that I need at least another week or two but it may take longer since I do have a day-job ;)

That'll probably come about in a 2.0 version. I wanted to get the core of the game playable as quickly as possible. The only risk is whether or not the English tutorials have more dialog boxes to fill up. Since I'm not modifying the game's code, just the strings, I have to work within the current boundaries which can mean being less verbose in the tutorials.

Another thing I was hoping to do for 2.0 was get some other folks on the forums who actually speak Japanese to contribute some better translations. I haven't asked yet since I'd like to keep the pace up and get the first complete version out the door as soon as possible.

One last thing!

There wasn't another patch update yesterday, as I was working on rewriting the core of the BFLIM tool to allow me to replace irregularly shaped (see: not power-of-two) textures. Here's one of them ;) :

First Contact translation:
Everyone of Earth,
Hello.
I'm a Martian.
..You like us?
And you,
Best friends,
I want to be.
..That's a lie.
These days,
We've noticed,
Amazingly
Good food!
By the way,
Everyone,
I want,
to meet!
Just kidding!

I'm so, so dumb. I chose to overwrite the game and so I lost my save.
Does someone have a save file to share with me? I just need all levels beaten so I can choose stages freely.

Return to First Contact, (Or First Contact 2):
Everyone of Mars.
Have a nice day!
Tell everyone,
I'm single.
As you can see,
Ridiculous or not,
I'm handsome.
That's a joke.
Oh, I want fashion.
Oh, I want models.
But, this time,
Hey, I'll confess,
To Katie.
"Lots of"
"Changes were made,"
"Since,"
"You left me!"
"Your food was good."
I'm alone,
Little by little,
It breaks my heart!
Just kidding!

Take your time then. I'm just glad someone is doing it.

It would be nice to have a warning on OP about overwriting the game and losing the save, as at least 3 people reported having issues with this.
