2015 Is Nintendo's Lowest Reviewed Year on Metacritic in 10 Years

nintendologo.jpg

2015 Has been a year of solid releases all around for most publishers, but it would appear the same can't be said for our good friends at Nintendo.

NeoGAF member TI82 compiled Metacritic data from the last 10 years of Nintendo games, and 2015 is the worst one, with an average rating of 69.8. That includes all Nintendo games, both Wii U and 3DS games.

While the Wii U has had some great releases this year, such as Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and Yoshi’s Woolly World, it also had some pretty bad ones. Like Mario Tennis Ultra Smash, which has a 60 rating on Metacritic.

As the chart below shows, the best years for Nintendo were 2009 and 2010, with Metacritic averages of 82 and 86, respectively.

For 2015, Nintendo’s average is just 69.8. By comparison, Sony’s average is 76.6, and Microsoft’s is 80. However, Nintendo has released more games this year than both Sony and Microsoft combined.

The chart breaks down as follows:

Keep in mind that release of titles such as Xenoblade X do not contribute to these averages due to yearly cutoff around this time in November.

The fact that Star Fox and Zelda were delayed may also contribute to the much lower score, coupled with the recent releases of highly anticipated titles met with mediocre reception, such as Yo-kai Watch and Tri-Force Heroes.

What is your opinion of Nintendo's 2015 year of games? Do you agree it is as lackluster as it appears to be?

Nintendo's quality this year also sort of depends on your region. For example, Fire Emblem: If released in Japan and so far for me it's a GOTY contender. It's just one game but it's a big one for those who have been able to play it.

To note, Xenoblade Chronicles X has been available in Japan for months with nay a review on Metacritic.

Heh, I noticed that Nintendo's been doing bad decisions and not-so-good games this year... 'cept for Splatoon, Smash, and some other games.
Let's hope they get their sh*t together for next year, and turn back into the Nintendo we all love. I doubt it, tho...

But, guys, don't use Metacritic to judge stuff or what. Here's why:

Not just this year, it's been like this since 2013 ....even probably since 2012??
I very much doubt things will ever improve ...the investors are just to greedy.
This is why Nintendo gamers are getting quick sell add on crappy games.
Things will only get worse from here out!

Last year was really great though.

While I think that Metacritic is being taken too serious by people it's still a pretty bad sight.
Outside of Xenoblade X I haven't been bothered to pick up any Nintendo game this year. There wasn't even a single 3DS game that caught my interest this year.
Usually there is at least Pokemon but I'll guess that'll have to wait.

Nintendo sucks.
Rinse and Repeat.
Either they hit a homerun with the NX ... Or they'll crumble.

After the Wii U press conference I said Ninty screwed up big time. Tablet controller ! LOL.

I look forward to the NX press conference. I have zero confidence Nintendo is able to right their ship. I'm definitely getting the NX, as there is a 50% chance it will be there last console.

Looks like we got an expert over here. My sources only told me that the NX has a 27% chance of being their last console.

My dad who works at Nintendo said the NX is going to be 6 Wii U's taped together to be a 6x stronger Nintendo system, and will play 6DS games.

Trust me, my dad who works at Nintendo is an expert.
My dad is nintendo, and he told me the NX is gonna be a next-gen virtual boy that comes with a live cat instead of a controller.

this, Nintendo is having a 'bad' year because of the many games with a low budget they made and relatively few with a larger budget.
The so-called, "bad" year, can also be attributed to Nintendo simply not making games fans want. Instead, we get an onslaught of titles that nobody in the right mind asked for.

Also Nintendo trademark delays of all the games people wanted, but yeah stuff like Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival is just awful.

Yeah, the delay has become synonymous with Nintendo. It's really annoying. It's like you get so hyped up for a game only to bang your head against the wall when you hear, inevitably, it's delayed until next quarter. :glare:

It is annoying, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand it. Anyone who works in software development can tell you that it's nigh impossible to accurately estimate development timelines, and in the end it's either dealing with the delays or dealing with Ubisoft-tier bugs and unfinished-ness.

Absolutely. It just bugs me that it happens so frequently with Nintendo. Sure, other companies face the same problems with estimated release dates, but Nintendo hasn't shown any initiative to address the problem. Or even rectify it.
