Xbox console sales plummet as overall revenue skyrockets

Microsoft's Q3 financial report is in, and there are some less-than-ideal results for the Xbox brand. According to the document, Xbox hardware sales tanked by a massive 31% compared to last year's sales, which were already down by 30% in the previous Q3 report, meaning total Xbox Series X|S sales have more than halved since 2022. While there aren't any exact numbers reported by Microsoft in terms of total Xbox Series X|S units sold, some gamers have sleuthed out that according to publisher Take-Two's own earnings report, 77 million Gen 9 video game consoles have been sold, and Sony themselves have stated the PlayStation 5 has surpassed 50 million systems sold. That puts Xbox's current generation hardware at about 25 million units sold, putting it ahead of the Nintendo GameCube, but behind the Sega Genesis, in terms of hardware sales ranking.

While hardware sales are looking a little rough, Xbox's gaming revenue leaped 51% compared to last year, bringing the Q3 earnings to $1.8 billion--a record-setting amount for the company. That huge growth comes with a caveat however, as all of it comes from the finalized acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Without them, Microsoft would have experienced a 4% year-over-year decline in revenue. Similarly, Xbox content and services saw an increase of 62% from last year, but factoring Activision Blizzard out of the equation shows that the numbers would only be up a single 1% total.

Microsoft expects to continue to see Xbox sales decline in the next quarter, with CEO Satya Nadella ending the earnings call on a statement regarding Xbox "meeting players where they are", and highlighting Xbox game sales on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.

We are committed to meeting players where they are by bringing great games to more people on more devices. We set third quarter records for game streaming hours, console usage, and monthly active devices.”

“Finally, we’re expanding our games to new platforms, bringing four of our fan favorites to Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation for the first time. In fact, earlier this month we had 7 games among the top 25 on the PlayStation Store, more than any other publisher.

Funny, after all the Nintendo dooming, it might be Microsoft that goes third party.
Well yeah because in recent years both the Playstation and Xbox have become more of computers than anything. They release most of their games on PC and are really just gaming boxes. Xbox especially in this case. I mean the Xbox has nearly every game on PC and the console literally allows running homebrew natively.
Doesn't help that they are trying so hard to make us go all digital.

I prefer all digital. I haven't bought a game disc since the Xbox 360. I will say that the lack of good sales, in comparison to Steam, have caused me not to buy as many games as I wanted.

I'm surprised Microsoft isn't simply removing artificial OS restrictions and branding their Xbox as a pre-built gaming PC.

COVID killed this console generation all games got delayed systems were hard to find and now the new systems will be ready in the next 2/3 years so why invest the money

The only amazing thing to me is how the Switch keeps selling

As much as people may wanna shit on Xbox, it is needed to survive to prevent an all out monopoly in the console market

I mean, Nintendo would nearly double their revenue overnight if they started selling Wii U and older games on PC. Software is king, and Microsoft's strategy on that front is working great for them.

If Microsoft really wanted to sell consoles they could easily make their games Xbox console exclusive. Like Starfield. Or the next Elder Scrolls.

But it seems like they honestly don't care about consoles really. The money from PC is probably good to offset it.

I think were Xbox went wrong was going diskless.

This took away backward compability.

The series S did not need 2k graphics. Tv s went from 1080p to 4K.

The series S should have had disk and rendered games at 720p or 1080p to give modern games at a cheaper cost.

I think another thing Xbox should have done was make storage upgradable.

Xbox should have gone back to its roots and worked with developers to make co op games.

People also buy games because they have families and multiple kids. Having Halo with co op was an experience people had that was taken away. Co op is part of what make s a console a console and not a pc gaming machine.

And honestly, with how most Sony/Xbox/Multiplat games keep focusing on increasing graphical realism while repeating the same gameplay formulas, I don't even see a point in them launching new systems. both companies are not even fully utilizing their existing console capabilities...and all the while a console with specs already outdated by the previous generation is the outselling them by historical margins.

I think several points throughout the thread are correct. After the success of the Xbox 360, Microsoft attempting to go completely digital was "too much too soon." The naming conventions after the 360 were "Wii U/3DS" levels of irresponsible decision-making. The "Xbox 360" name made sense because the "Xbox 2" was going to be up against the PS3, which would have been a marketing challenge.

Microsoft didn't prioritize exclusives much during the PS4/XBone era, and it's another case of consumer perception compounding over time. By the time the Series X came out, Microsoft wasn't seen as a strong contender against Sony. Now everything's being ported to PC, so there's even less incentive to own a Microsoft console.

It's a shame because Microsoft clearly worked hard on their first Xbox. It shows in a comparison of developer/publisher support, and the Xbox 360 proved to be a strong successor. In fact, the PS3 had to catch up with several features.

It's a shame that newer Microsoft consoles feel like an afterthought.

i love my xbox series x
kinda disappointed that sony's skating by with an inferior product
I dunno about that, MS really dropped the ball with proprietary storage expansion and the amount of ads in Xbox's UI. Not to mention that PS5 edges out XSX in both performance and fidelity with cross-platform games, despite technically having slightly weaker hardware. I do prefer the Xbox controller layout, but third-party options make that a non-issue.

I'm not as knowledgeable on the Series X, but did Microsoft really do proprietary storage? I wish big companies stopped chasing that dream. Sure, customers will buy it because they need to, but the bad word of mouth that will bite them in the long run.

I think the Vita suffered tremendously because of that. The lowest option (4GB) was $30 USD, and the most expensive (32GB) was $120 USD!

While we're on the subject, what's the deal with controllers being as expensive as games? Why are digital downloads the same price as physical?

These are the only 2 options to choose from:
Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S
WD_BLACK C50 Storage Expansion Card for Xbox from WD_BLACK

And to add my 2 cents regarding your question a/b controllers and physical games costing as much as digitals games — it's b/c they can charge what the market is willing to pay for it...

The proprietary storage thing was really stupid on their part too. Would have been very easy to add a snap-on module that allowed you to easily add an M.2. PS5 definitely did that better.

Hell the Vita issue there is partially what led to it being hacked, so people could use MicroSD adapters. I know quite a few friends who modded their unit just so they could save a hundred bucks on storage.

I agree with you on controllers. You don't even get rechargeable with Xbox for that price. Again, PS5 at least feels like it's worth it for that price (at least more so than Nintendo and Xbox).

And digital games tend to have better sales than physical. They do have infrastructure and datacenters to upkeep for downloads. You're paying full price so they can maintain the store and online infrastructure. I still agree with you though. It always irked me that with less overhead they went for more profits instead of more accessibility.

I'm in my mid-30's and worked as a software engineer in the Xbox division of Microsoft throughout the launch of the Series S/X consoles.

As someone who has been a gamer for a long time, and who has an insider perspective of what Microsoft is doing recently, news like this gives me a lot of mixed feelings.

I think that a big part of "gaming" - at least during my time growing up from the early 90's through the late 00's - was that there was a constant, exponential growth in compute power. What this meant was that from one year to the next, there were legitimately entirely new experiences that were completely impossible until that point. The number of franchises - and more importantly, actual game styles and mechanics - that were born during this time is mind-boggling. As an example, there was a point in time where Call of Duty was revolutionary in terms of gameplay.

The real problem with the gaming landscape these days is that we've hit a wall where the limitation is now the medium itself. There is only so much you can do with a 2D display and a controller, and by this point we've pretty much done it all. Compute is no longer the main limiting factor. I can honestly say that I haven't really played a game that made me feel like "wow, this is completely new!" in over a decade at this point.

When you combine this with the fact that Microsoft already makes the world's most popular PC OS, and that it is so (relatively) cheap to get huge amounts of computing power in a general-purpose PC now - both in terms of super fast CPU cores and relatively capable graphics hardware - it becomes a very difficult argument to justify the investment in resources required to build and maintain a console brand, especially when the hardware itself is typically sold at a loss.

TBH, if I was in leadership at Microsoft, I would be looking for ways to unify the PC and console platforms to the point where "Xbox" is just a launcher. The only big questions to answer would be (1) how to maintain revenue made from selling licenses through their first-party storefront on a more open platform where others exist and (2) how to combat piracy/secure revenue through that store.
