Hacking [noob] .3ds .3dz .cia and headers

Hi folks,

I have been using Gateway for quite a while with I suppose scene releases (.3ds) and lately with .cia as well. I have been downloading FW updates and games updates (via emunand) when ready it was safe to do so.
I am running 9.2.x I beleive (don't have my 3DS at work so I'll check when back home tonight).

Would someone tell me what .3dz and headers are and how I could use/make them ? (told you it was a dumb question). I just want to make sure nothing is gonna turn wrong when my kids want to play online.

.3dz roms are for playing online, basically .3dz is a .3ds file with a header injected, read more here

Do you mean that it was not safe to play online with emunand and .3ds ? Is it safe with .cia ?

It is not possible at all to play online with a .3ds, it must be a .3dz for online capability. .cia should be able to play online fine with no headers though.

Is there a list of online compatible releases somewhere ? Can all games be converted to go online ? I saw a couple of releases that include a series of digits (I suppose the header), so can we use the same header every time or is it something that one needs to search for each and every game (and if so how) ?

using rxtools is there a way to make games online safe or do i have to change the headers of cias i've downloaded?
