This is one of Mario Kart 8's biggest flaws and a shame really because it's a great game if only it had tons of content.
Considering it has the most content of all Mario Kart games (and kart racers in general?) this is unfortunate. I still applaud Nintendo for taking a solid approach to DLC in Mario Kart 8 and we can only hope that there's more after the second DLC pack, or that the second DLC pack will be enough to round out the experience.

If you compare the DLC tracks with the standard tracks, you'll notice there's little variation in the standard tracks and only few tracks truly take advantage of anti-gravity. That's Mario Kart 8's biggest problem. Some of the DLC tracks already have been excellent, but there's laziness to them as well (e.g. SNES Rainbow Road).

Maybe it's nostalgia but whenever I go back to Double Dash!! it never gets old or repetitive, it's just that good!

Double Dash also had the unique 2-character mechanic that no other Mario Kart employs so far. Try this: play Mario Kart 8 a little, then play Mario Kart 64, then play Mario Kart SNES, then play Mario Kart Double Dash.

Did you like Double Dash at the end?

I sure hope they allow to use Mega Man and Lucas' for Mii racing suits.

Surely you mean Lucario, right? After all, Lucas is but the name of a misunderstood boy in the olden lore known as the "MOTHER 3" in the Land of the Rising Sun. Brought to life in the previous incarnation of the Smash Brothers, yet abandoned to the state of not being in this most current of the Smash Brothers tale.

Note to self: I should seriously take it easy with EarthBound.

I thought it was great as well, but the balance of content is really weird.

I mean, the first pack is called Mario Kart 8 × The Legend of Zelda, yet there's just Link to represent the series out of the 3 new characters. The other two are Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach, both which feel very out of place given that Mario and Peach already have various forms (Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach, Baby Mario, Baby Peach). Out of 4 new vehicles we get the Master Cycle that's related to the Zelda universe (though its debut happened through this very DLC) with one of the vehicles coming from F-Zero (Blue Falcon). Lastly, out of 8 new tracks, only one is Zelda themed. It's very well made, I love the rupees in place of coins, etc., but again the balance of content seems off.

At least with the second pack (Mario Kart 8 × Animal Crossing) there's going to be both Villager and Isabelle to play with. The third new character is Dry Bowser (again, what were they thinking?) and it remains to be seen just how much of the content will be related to Animal Crossing. I was kinda hoping to get to play as Tom Nook... :( At the same time, I'm hopeful that Nintendo will give us a few new surprises as well, like the F-Zero and Excitebike tracks in the first pack.

All said and done, I believe Nintendo has made some great DLC for Mario Kart 8.

Yes Yes Yes. You are spot on here.

Honestly what were Nintendo thinking with the koopa kids? They had the potential to really smarten up and expand the roster but instead they just basically spat in our faces. The DLC packs are excellent but why on earth have a LOZ pack with Link and one map. That one map is probably my favourite DLC map.. the music, the rupees... but we needed more of that.

We should have got Zelda, Link and Ganondorf.

My main negatives for MK 8:

1. Battle Mode - what the fuck
2. Roster - Koopa Kids - what the fuck.

Two glaring mistakes in an otherwise amazing and beautiful package. Luckily it really doesn't impact for me how excellent the game is.

I only play MK8 co-op/against people IRL so I can't really comment on getting bored after X hours.

This is spot on. I don't know why Nintendo didn't polish the battle mode more. It was so much fun in Double Dash!!.

As for the second point, I find it very telling that in Smash Bros., the Koopalings are alternate costumes for 1 character as opposed to taking more spots in the roster. We know that Mario Kart 8 supports alternate costumes (Mii, Shy Guy and Yoshi), so I really don't understand why almost half of the roster is made up of the Koopalings alone.

Was Nintendo lazy or did they run out of ideas or what?

No idea. I kinda wish MK would take some inspiration from Smash Bros and expand their roster by taking Nintendo liscenced characters from those. Imagine having Diddy Kong and Ness on MK?

I think they were definitely lazy and working to a deadline. We saw that Smash Bros was rushed and luckily Sakurai put his foot down and said he needed more time. Maybe if the Wii U wasn't in dire need of a saviour AKA Mario Kart, we could have seen a better final product.

But even then, it doesn't really provide any excuses for DLC.

I'd pay for DLC now that fixed battle mode.

Well, it doesn't help that Nintendo is putting their resources into 3DS when the Wii U is struggling. We need games, high quality games, but they take time to develop. It's been well over 2 years since the launch of the Wii U and honestly we have yet to see anything good outside the usual suspects (e.g. Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros.). Who knows how rushed the development of Zelda will be.

I actually think its been an excellent few years for exclusives. If we had multi platforms as well, the Wii U library would be ridiculous. In its first 2 and a bit years, it has around 10+ really really amazing games.

The problem is Nintendo are not increasing the amount of exclusives to compensate for the lack of multi platforms. I personally think they just can't manage it financially. The 3DS is shifting units after units and the new3DSXL will extract even more money from consumers (I bought one!). Even the 3DS release schedule is not jam packed. We have Majoras Mask, Xenoblade (2 ports basically), then code name steam and a Fire Emblem game with no release date.

I agree though.. more effort needs to be put in the Wii U but I think they realise its a fruitless effort and I can't see them turning around the AWFUL branding and advertising of the Wii U. The name is a curse. They'd need to do something big like release pokemon on a home console to really make an impact this gen and that won't happen.

But the best we're getting is some retarded crossover of Pokémon and Tekken... Ugh. I really have little faith in Nintendo going forward with the Wii U.

If only Nintendo or a third party made a "3DS Player" or something that enabled 3DS games to be played on TV with the bottom screen on the Wii U GamePad, I'd buy just that and then expand my 3DS collection. There are many 3DS games I'd like to play on TV and I don't really care if it looks like a pixelated mess like Vita TV. Just waiting for that mod to happen.

lol I've seen some of those on the internet on youtube. Obviously very expensive.
But that would never happen. the 3DS is perfect and Nintendo know to leave it alone and just keep making games and selling them as portable units.
I'm a big 3DS fan and I don't think the 3DS should be fused in any with the Wii U as I see it damaging the 3DS brand rather than improving the Wii U brand.

Nintendo's key for next gen is third party. If they can't get that support back AND have some good release titles, just don't bother with home consoles if they can't turn a profit with their current user base.
