Okay, so I'm aiming to get a new 3DS as my old one has been sold without my consent years ago. I would mostly use it to hack and load ROMs/emulators... but now here comes the question...

Which 3DS model is the best to get? Is there any significant difference between o3DS (I owned this tiny, old thing, perhaps one of oldest models) and New3DS? New2DS is also under the consideration, as I really don't care about the 3D gimmick. (o2DS is not considered due to how uncomfortable it is in my hands)

Also, I would like to not go too overboard with the console as I have limited funds (N3DS XL still costs 900+PLN here, years after release which is ridiculous)

In the future I also consider customizing the shell of the console, hence why I might consider N3DS....

So, do you have any suggestions on what model is best to get? Thanks in advance.

I’d look at the games/homebrew you want to run and see if they take advantage of the n3DS hardware (i.e. the better SoC, NFC or the C-Stick, etc.).

If they do then I’d definitely go for one of the ‘new’ models.

i mean.. i plan on playing games that my laptop can't handle emulating for some reason - ACNL, any 3DS Zelda games, Pokemon US/UM, Smash... all I know that they mostly make use of the NFC thing (amiibos), and I don't even own these, so doubt it'd be useful anyways.

also - since I have dumped ROMs of some of these games already, will online work as usual if I manage to get the games to work on my 3DS? or will it get me banned somehow? (for the record, I NEVER hacked a 3DS before.)

Good news is the NFC reader isn't really required anymore since it can be emulated.

You shouldn't be banned at all unless you're doing something stupid. Like cheating in online games.

Realistically, if you're on a budget, just get one of the o3DS models unless you can find one of the "New" models for cheap-ish.

saw recently an o3DS XL for around 500PLN, with some shovelware bundled in, i mean it's a good deal, but I'm not getting money for a 3DS until October, so anything may change :rofl2:
let's hope I get to hunt a great deal... also I'm really avoiding used ones as I can't trust people anymore.

Nintendo hasn’t really banned anyone in a hot minute. Most of the time it’s only online cheaters who get banned but I’ve seen comments of that not being upheld these days. Piracy has only had two confirmed ways of getting banned; playing a popular 1st/2nd party game online, like with Pokémon S/U/US/UM. Or using a pirated header with flashcarts like Gateway. There was a banwave that happened once but no one has confirmed why it happened nor the factors involved with who was banned. There are a guide to potentially avoiding future bans.

I would strongly suggest you buy one from amazon.co.jp they are normal precised and you just hack it and change region after. The store will stop working but it does no longer matter, because the store is closing soon.

then please paypal me money so I can buy it now :rofl2: but for real, I might at one point give in to the used 3DSs market, as they pop in and out from time to time, some offers being real deals...

some people also seem to sell 3DSs with CFW already installed so might check these out too.

I bought a n3ds xl with shipping 10-20 dollars to Sweden so it's not too insane :)
I get what you mean, when you wrote about prices in your own country... In Sweden a secondhand n3ds xl starts at 300 dollars plus.....
But I suggest to just see what you can get so you can compare (they call the xl for ll in Japan), but otherwise I wish you goodluck because it's getting insane with prices on the n3ds xl/n2ds xl

my problem is that ever since the release the prices haven't changed one bit... might give in to some older models too as I don't plan on playing N3DS exclusives (not like there are a lot of them to begin with), though the plate-changing model is so convincing, that'd be so good

In terms of its size, form factor, dpad and buttons, and emulation abilities, I find the New 2DS XL pretty perfect.
man I was so fucking pissed when this model came out because it had everything I wanted and costed me less than my oldie 3DS at the time... but when I was buying my bad boy there was this unspoken abomination aka o2DS.... can't believe some people actually found it comfortable to use
