Play the romhack Sonic 3 Complete. It combines Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles in the way they were supposed to be played.

Also, talking about 3DS Sonic games, the 3DS version of Generations is pretty good, and so is Sonic Lost World. (Gameplay-wise, it's much better than on Wii U/PC, graphics-wise, worse)
about sonic generations yea, it feels good, i never gave too much attention for it until a few days ago when i got to play more, it's fun

If you can, I would definitely play the PC version of Sonic Generations. There's tons of mods made by the community as well, adding to replayability. The PC version is hands-down the best 3D Sonic game to-date.

I think some of you didn't read his comment, he said LIMITED ONLY TO 3DS. Why you bother mentioning other games NOT ON 3DS just says something.

Well if we was talking about actual 3DS games, I played sonic generations, is not that bad i guess but I suppose the console version is better though I haven't played it beyond a demo. There was only 4 sonic games made for 3DS so is no much there compared to some other systems which has more popularity. Now if you don't mind maybe NDS (Since is still playable on 3DS) All 3 Sonic Rush/Rush Adventure/Sonic colors is probably better. I think even people would have liked sonic advance on GBA VC as well. Then on Eshop you can get sonic 1 and 2 3D, I think is probably a well put together port of the genesis version but the two Smartphone ones (currently free on android/Ios) is probably best ones. There is also a few sonic game gear games like Sonic Blast, Sonic 1 and sonic 2 (Not to be confused with the genesis games since is different) Tails' adventure while not a "SONIC" game is more like a metroid game starring tails if you like that kind of thing, then also sonic drift 2 is a racing game so again not a "SONIC" game. Some people may not like sonic blast but it could be worse and there is worst too.

It realy depends on what you are looking for. I'm a big fan of the 3D Sonic, and don't like the 2D era. So yeah, I would recomend you mostly any 3D Sonic game (not all, oc).

Whatever you do don’t buy Lost World for 3ds. The first few levels are fun, but then the levels get really frustrating. The levels that aren’t frustrating are just boring and aren’t fun. The bosses are also a complete joke. I would recommend getting the Game Gear games from the eShop, as long as you don’t get Sonic Drift 2 or Sonic Labyrinth, they both suck.

If not for that "modern" attitude, I would hve said:
- Sonic 2 (SMD rom or Sonic 2 3D on 3DS)
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles (SMD hacked rom, to emulate the game + its add-on)
- Sonic CD
Maybe Sonic Rush too? (DS)

Sonic Adventure is a pretty good 3D platform iteration, but it does not look good with its 128bits polygonal design. (I thought it was nice back then thoough and the game is still great)
