The SD ROM loader is called nds-bootstrap. It's a backend for the forwarders, TWLoader, and SRLoader (for DSi users).
By "not-dead", it means development is still going.

Super Mario 64 DS is good too, and so are the Sonic games listed as working.

I don't own a copy of Super Mario 64 DS. Also, the only sonic game that 100% works is Sonic Rush and that's the only sonic game I don't have.

I'm working on a n3ds b9s w/ Acekard 2.1 and I've got everything running except for one last issue.

When I boot the installed forwarder cias- it boots the a firmware from the Flashcard instead of short-cutting straight into the .nds.

Any advice would be appreciated

Did you extract the correct flashcard pack, including the "for 3DS SD card" folder?

I extracted the flashcard pack for acekard 2, and also copied the "for 3ds" folder to the root of my 3ds SD.

I'm assuming it's the correct pack due to the firmware actually being able to run on the flashcart.

Did you have "Automatically set ROM path" marked, and did you drag and drop your .nds files from the flashcard's microSD (not the PC desktop) to the Forwarder3-DS window?

I believe I did have "Auto set path" checked

and I certainly did drag and drop directly from the NDS SD card

Are the nds files supposed to be in a specific directory on the SD?

No. They should be on the flashcard's microSD, not the 3DS SD.
It can be anywhere in the selected device.

Well then, I'm afraid I can't help you. I don't own an Acekard 2i.
You may have to settle for TWLoader. It can run ROMs from 3DS SD card via it's backend, nds-bootstrap. Loading speeds may be slow, and it may not support many games, but it will improve in the future.

I'll just try to rebuild the forwarders, it's so close to working it hurts haha.

Thanks for the suggestion for TWLoader, I've used it in the past- but luckily on Bs9 my flashcart now boots from the home menu with no issues.

All I need is these forwarders to play nice and I'm good!

Aight I'm about to buy a DSTT but just curious on why this one is recommended? it seems really old/outdated, does it work with all ds games like the R4?

I'm probably doing something wrong. I have a DSTT with my N3DS (luma, b9s) and have used the Forwarder program and installed the cia's. Yet when I try to run them, the NDS screen appears and goes white; stays white. I can only exit to the home menu. I don't know what went wrong. Can you help me?

Yes, both [loadcard_dstt.nds] and [ntr_forwarder] are in the _nds folder at the root of my SD card. I installed TWLoader and now the forwarder cia's work from my home menu too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
