Nintendo have just confrmed that the launch of the Switch and sales of Zelda are the largest in Nintendo's history, for both hardware and software.

Here is Nintendo:

We can confirm that, across Europe, Nintendo Switch sold more in its launch weekend than any other Nintendo hardware in history.

Launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has not only been bestowed with some of the highest review scores in gaming history, it's also the biggest-selling Nintendo launch title ever in Europe, even outselling Wii Sports in first weekend sales.

And all this in March – traditionally a quiet time for the games industry.

What Nintendo need to do with the switch (for me to buy one anyway) is REALLY push the VC part of it. We know the X1 chipset is good enough for Gamecube and Wii titles, Nintendo knowing the systems inside out could top unoffical emulation. Give us SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii games etc that we can take on the go and the system is a winner, with or without 3rd party support for the actual Switch part.

The wiiu played all the nintendo home consoles, natively or by vc, only gc needed hb to run. They couldve made gc on wiiu if they wanted tho... the point is- the wiiu failed...

I expect sales to sharply decline when all the die-hard fans secure a unit, as there are no games to keep the system going at present. The only physical launch titles available are Zelda, Bomberman, 1-2-Switch, Just Dance and Skylanders Imaginators, there's only so many units you can sell with 5 games. The system lacks core titles at present and, in my opinion, should've been released during the Autumn season when Skyrim, Mario Kart and other games are primed for release.

The ratio between the number of Switch sold and the number of copies of Zelda BotW is 91%. I remember some Nintendo executive saying that they hope that people won't buy the Switch only for Zelda... Nice try On the other side I heard that Snipperclips is a really good game in multiplayer. I wasn't interested in this game but there's a demo on the eShop so I might try it. Did someone try the full version by any chance?

The Switch has only 9 games you can play at the moment. 9 games. I don't like Zelda games, so I look at the other games available and...wow, there's NOTHING I could play on this thing. Awesome.

You could argue the same with the 3DS and the Wii U, but all Nintendo consoles have been compatible with the previous gen since the Game Boy Color, so all the way back to the beginning of handheld games. I wasn't expecting the Switch to have backwards compatibility, but I was hoping for more games other than "ZELDA!!1". Yeah, that game sucks for some people, believe it or not.

It's so mind blowing. If you were to have such a tight line-up, why not having at least ONE killer app that everyone will enjoy? Why not a Super Mario? Or even a remake of Mario Maker? Why not a new WarioWare? Hell, why not getting into the mobile gaming and remove all the stupid microtransaction? Why not making a Clash of Clans clone that's actually fun without micro transactions?

Sure, it's called spacing out the releases over a year and have a solid catalog when Christmas hit and their biggest title (Switch exclusive that is) comes out.

I really don't get all the people complaining about "I want more launch games!" when most people buy 1 to 3 games at max, on launch. Because the big inital price of the console, people don't have a huge budget to put on games, then people complain there are no games for the console since all of them got released on the launch. By spacing it out, there will be a stready stream of new games to the system. Plus a lot of indie titles are incoming as well.

Man, I would totally buy a Bayonetta 2 port!
The WiiU is the first and only Nintendo console/handheld that I haven't bought, so I missed the key titles from it.

Same. I can't say I really regretted not getting it. I'm hoping that Sm4sh, Super Mario Maker and Bayonetta 1/2 make their way over. Yes, they're ports.. but they'll be bought.

What about the sales in NA and JP? Why did they only mention Europe? And where is the actual figure? EU has always been dominated by Sony so record sales is not necessarily a sign of booming. Like saying record Xbox sales in japan go from 340 to 350.
Also - The Wii was massively under-stocked in the beginning. Again it's not necessarily even relevant that it sold more than Wii Sports until we get actual figures. Much less a sign that it's bound to be as or more popular than the Wii.

I'll just wait and see all the numbers because right now it sure sounds like some sweet information cherrypicking so far. As for me since the Switch was rushed out and has some bad design choices, from screen to joymi connections to screen scratching to the dumb accessory setups to battery life, I'm already dead set on waiting for the inevitable revision. I'm guessing there may even be "portable only" and "home only" versions for half the price or something, down the line. That'd be pretty good.
