Nintendo has finally decided to show off their new "home gaming system", code-name NX. It's time to see what Nintendo has up their sleeves and put all the rumors to rest.

It's called the Nintendo Switch. Rumors are true, it's a tablet with connectable buttons that you can play at home and on the go. Console Controller looks similar to the Xbox One's. Has small little remotes and supports multiplayer. NBA game being shown. 3D Mario title. When you connect the portable controllers the system goes from console to portable. Skyrim and Splatoon shown. Still coming March next year.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. In what way is it gimmicky at all? It's a home console and a handheld in one, that allows multiplayer without even buying an additional controller. Perhaps you don't understand what gimmicky actually means, because Switch seems very practical for its purpose.

More gimmicky crap :angry:
they aren't trying to appeal to people with gimmicks... they are trying to be different than their competitors at sony and microsoft... it wouldn't be much fun if every console was sold with constant updated features/looks...

If that were the case I don't think you'd use the term in this situation. People claimed the Wii was gimmicky for its motion controls, and claimed the WiiU was gimmicky for a touchscreen on the controller. The Switch has neither of these things. It's straight-up gaming with a straightforward controller design.

If skyrim is being ported does this mean we will finally get fallout 4 on a nintendo console!?!?!
I wish.. we might as well have nvidea gamestream and have all of our pc versions on the go... but, I just hope that skyrim on the switch, has mods like the xbox version...

If the NX/Switch would share the same/similar power as the Wii U BUT with different architecture, forget about the backward compatibility. Otherwise (same architecture), it would be possible and especially if its much more powerful.
The Tegra x2 chip doesn't use powerPC architecture, so only emulated backward compatibility if anything. But hey, could probably emulate gamecube stuff.

The video shows it playing Splatoon (and other Wii U titles?) and Zelda BOTW which is Wii U / Switch cross platform. So it's either backwards compatible, or easy to port to / emulate on.
You never know... maybe they just use an extended Wii U SDK...

That would just mean they'd have to re-compile for the Switch and change some code related to the gamepad / controllers...

hmmm the removable controllers in 2 player mode , what happens to the L and R trigger buttons? do they still work?
does each removable joycon have it's own set of L and R trigger buttons then then the L and R buttons for controller and tablet mode get deactivated?
would be weird if they stood active since one joycon would have it bottom left and the other would have it bottom right,
also is this an autostereoscopic display? or will nintendo just release a switch plus 3D in 12 to 18 mos after the switch release?
we know they love their hardware revisions on handhelds, on consoles not so much but i guess that is to be determined on hybrids

yeah! tony hawks underground on the go!!! I'll probabily break my joysticks playing that game more than anything else!!

Lets all hope it takes off better than the WiiU!!

The Wii was indeed a gimmick which changed how games were played which also had a knock on effect and made everyone take notice. The WiiU was more of an expansion which tragically bombed. :(

Fingers crossed the 3rd party devs stick with it and get the most out of it.

I think the reason it doesn't have a dpad is, if you wanna give someone else the second stick as a controller, it has to be identical. Hence, buttons.
Of course that's why it's like that. As I've mentioned before, the difference between a conventional D-pad, and four independent buttons is purely cosmetic, the function and internal hardware is exactly the same:

Also, you have that teeny-tiny d-pad on the top right of the switch controller - probably for playing a Minish Cap port?
