Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

Not bad considering it comes with the console base tho.

Is there any confirmation that console base increases the horsepower of the devcice? They couldve fit a GPU on that and use thunderbolt 3 like interface to juice up the raw power.
I'm guessing it'll underclock on the go and run at full power when in the base. underclock to conserve battery and heat, full power on the base.

The base couldn't house a HDD, could it? I wonder if the portable section has an SD slot for space?

Don't know what to think about the nintendo switch. Don't have it in me to buy a nintendo console day one these days. Just feel sort of sad that 3ds and ps vita might be the last official dedicated handheld systems after seeing the video for the nintendo switch.

To all users complaining about the name, remember when they announced the Revolution name will be "Wii"
? everybody complained too.
Now, you probably don't care about it anymore.

If you want a home console only, never put it away from its support.
If you want a handheld only, never play the game on your TV.

One hardware to please both user's preferences.
COMPROMISES are being made....

Really, its perfect for ppl who want 2in1 but others who want a real home console (with more horse power) would be a little bit disappointed. I mean, they might end up buying it but .........

it uses cartridge, guess it means no backwars compatibilities with wii u, wii, gamecube, right?
Not necessarily. Its all about the whole architecture, for same/similar architecture its not a problem to make it backward compatible and basically there is no good reason for not doing it but for a different architecture you need an emulator which means, 50:50 chances (or worse) they will make it possible. Unofficial emulators which means patience and bad performance in beginning or official emulators from Nintendo like Virtual Console which means better compatibility and better performance but perfect emulator dont exist and in both cases you lose performance.

Basically:

If the NX/Switch would share the same/similar power as the Wii U BUT with different architecture, forget about the backward compatibility. Otherwise (same architecture), it would be possible and especially if its much more powerful.

Have you never opened a controller? All d-pads are just four buttons, no matter what shape the piece of plastic you press.

Anyone who has played Super Smash TV knows that 4 round buttons as a d-pad works just fine. C-buttons on N64 were often used the same way.

You are right, D-Pads are just DIGITAL buttons (1 or 0, you either press them or not), ergonomics are a different story.

Not liking that one bit... Ah well, Nintendo wont be getting another penny out of me.

More gimmicky crap
In what way is it gimmicky at all? It's a home console and a handheld in one, that allows multiplayer without even buying an additional controller. Perhaps you don't understand what gimmicky actually means, because Switch seems very practical for its purpose.

definitely a cool idea on paper, but i really doubt it can make any impact with the proliferation of tablets and phones around, the same problem the wii u had.
sure there are some great 3rd party games lined up for launch, just like the wii u had, but how long will 3rd party stand by? maybe the influence and support of nvidia will help convince publishers.

the portable play is interesting and i love the concept of the changeable, switchable controller. need real nintendo d pad though.

was really hoping for a modern home console with OPTIONAL portable screen device.

risky to me, effectively killing off the dedicated and profitable ds/3ds brand to merge.

maybe a ds/3ds player attachment?

clearly they still do not want to compete directly with xbox/ps, and im afraid this is a little TOO niche.

biggest gamble yet for nintendo, i hope it works out.

Did you even look up the very definition of "gimmick" in the dictionary?
"a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business"

Didn't think so.

The video shows it playing Splatoon (and other Wii U titles?) and Zelda BOTW which is Wii U / Switch cross platform. So it's either backwards compatible, or easy to port to / emulate on.

I think the reason it doesn't have a dpad is, if you wanna give someone else the second stick as a controller, it has to be identical. Hence, buttons.
