OTP Guide

Full Guide Release!

https://plailect.github.io/OTP/

All regions now supported!

If you appreciate this guide and the work I put into maintaining it, I accept donations through both Bitcoin and PayPal.

If you felt like the guide helped you out then I'd really appreciate it! If I get enough I may buy a 2DS for testing hardware stuff so I don't break another N3DS.

If the guide didn't help you out then I'm really sorry about that :(

I successfully dumped OTP with this guide, on a original 3DS system, without a hard mod! my trick was to use Gateway to downgrade to 4.x first, then use sysUpdater as cia in rxtools pasta mode to go to 2.1.0-4U. then I was able to dump to OTP.bin with Cubic Ninja. using sysUpdater as cia on 9.2 only caused errors.

yes, I'm fully aware of the risk I took. I did this on a console that I didn't mind if it became bricked during the process. I had a NAND dump ready in case we wanted to try our own hard mod at home, something we've been planning for some time. :)

Doing the same right now. Should be fun.

The guide states that sysUpdater be used to downgrade emuNAND. Is this correct?

What is otp? Sorry for my ignorance

One Time Password

I think it is One Time Padgen

It's true that OTP can, in some instances, refer to One-Time Passwords and One-Time PadGen (another authentication mechanism).

In the context used in this thread, OTP refers to the OTP registers on the 3DS. OTP there refers to an on-chip area that is One-Time Programmable non-volatile memory, which in this case are set to a secret value at manufacturing. The 3DS processors expose the OTP as a small region of memory. Access to this region is disabled once the ARM9 writes 0x2 to REG_SYSPROT9, thus requiring the CPU reboot to access again. The N3DS uses the OTP to derive secret values using a one-way function, and those derived secret values are then used for various purposes (such as part of the key generation, further encryption of the firmware partitions, etc.)

Well after multiple attempts, I can almost guarantee the 2ds isn't going to downgrade properly. I've downgraded 3 times so far each from 9.2, and each time I get the console's "An error has occurred..." bull****. While it still powers on [thank god my 2ds is a beast], and says it's on 2.1, it's got a bad case of frankenfirmware. Because of this, whatever cia file I needed installed to get the OTP isn't installed thus freezing whenever I go to the site to receive my OTP. I'm not sure why this is exactly. Best case scenario is that it's Sysupdater's fault (unlikely) or my working theory that because the 2ds came out substantially after 2.1, it was never meant to run certain files hence the reason why the cias don't install properly. More testing is right for a 2ds.

I believe it is sysUpdater's fault. earlier I posted that going to 4.x via Gateway worked better. 6.x might work as well on a 2DS. don't use the sysupdater cia to go to 6.x though

Why shouldn't I go to 6.x?

Also the reason for my theory is actually because of Gateway. You see on a 2ds, trying to downgrade to 4.x results in a nice message from Gateway saying that it doesn't "support my console". So that leads me to think that because the 2ds wasn't even around when 4.x came out it can't be compatible with it and it seems like some people have claimed that to be true. Also sorry if I seem rude. I'm just a little frustrated and disheartened by all this.

the 2DS started out with 6.0. you should go to 6.x somehow, but using the sysUpdater cia through rxTools pasta mode/etc might cause the same problems trying to go to 2.1. maybe one of the 3dsx sysUpdaters would work (not tested)?

I've tried doing Sysupdater using homebrew, but whenever I go and press "y" it'll stall and then it'll throw me back to the hb menu. Not sure what's up with that. I'm assuming it just crashed when it does that?

the normal sysUpdater.3dsx doesn't have the permissions it needs to downgrade. I could try something out later with one of the memchunkhax2 variants...

Oh man. I didn't even know there were variants to sysUpdater. What is the difference between a .cia version and a .3dsx memchunkhax2 variant?

.cia version is supposed to be used with rxTools pasta mode/miniPasta/etc. .3dsx is intended for 9.3 - 10.3 so you can downgrade to 9.2, though I have used it before to downgrade to 6.x and 4.x.

Ah ok thanks that makes sense. I actually didn't know that. Lol to think I found 10.1 to 9.2 hard this is a whole nother level of annoying. But anyways, if there's something you can think of pertaining with downgrading, I'm open to suggestions, so long as the chance of bricking isn't high. I don't have a hardmod right now and I was looking for this to replace it.
