Not complete, work in progress, but it works. Mayflash's adapter has the benefit that it switches from Wii U mode to standard USB HID mode, making it compatible with almost everything out of the box. Only for the rumble function it's necessary to download an additional driver from Mayflash, which they provide.
So in your honest opinion, which would be the better adapter to get assuming they're both the same price? Since this MayFlash adapter is wired I would expect it to have zero lag, similar to the Nintendo adapter and unlike the MayFlash wireless adapter. Is my assumption correct?

My honest opinion is that Mayflash makes very good products, but they're not exactly known for having that excellent build quality that Nintendo products typically have.

If you want to use GameCube controllers on your PC as well, I'd personally go for the new Mayflash adapter. The old adapter that connects to the Wiimote should be avoided at all costs at this point in time, unless you need to have a GameCube controller imitate a Classic Controller for games that support Classic Controllers.

The only reason to go for the official Nintendo adapter is that it's made by Nintendo and has excellent build quality. I don't think it'll perform any better than the Mayflash adapter.

Thanks for stating your opinion. I've been debating build quality myself lately, and came to the conclusion that this is simply an adapter that will not go under vigorous use and when it IS in use, since it does not lag at all, it will be no different than using the official adapter. With this in mind I have decided to go for one of these MayFlash adapters.

Put it another way: any adapter, even made by Nintendo, can and will eventually fail (Murphy's law). Your loss is smaller if your Mayflash adapter quits working. They're much more likely to be available new in a few years time and cost little. Having a Nintendo adapter go bad will be frustrating on many levels because there's no guarantee Nintendo will still be making them new in a few years time and prices only go up for Nintendo products as they age.

Then it's settled. I will order a MayFlash adapter when I get home tonight. Any recommended sellers?

A few things. While I have been using the controller INI for the Nintendo adapter, some work is going to be needed for Bongos and Dance Mats. In DDR Mario Mix, left and right on both of my mats have issues. On my Mario mat, Right seems to not want to respond in gameplay and will double react in the menu. For my Pelican mat, everything is perfect in the menu but left and right don't respond well in gameplay. In regards to the bongos, both DK Jungle Beat and Donkey Konga 2 will not respond to the clap sensor and microphone. Additionally sometimes left drum works and sometimes right. Start always works in both games. In short, some additional work will need to be done to get this adapter perfect with Nintendont.

How does the dancepad respond in HIDtest? If you got the correct controller.ini for it then it should say A=, B=, etc in Hidtest.

It should change to A=1 when you step on A or whatever button you step on.

I can vouch for this: tried Brawl and it looked as bad if not worse than on Wii with composite cables.. And I use component cables on my Wii. Since the Wii U uses HDMI, it would have been great to get even 720p Wii mode. Unfortunately we don't, it just looks horrible.
That's both subjective and dependant on your TV. Do you like jaggies? Blurriness? Loss of detail due to sharpened smoothing? Lag due to postprocessing away the above issues?

If your TV's native resolution is 1080p, then you will get at least one of the above. Nintendo uses quick and dirty upscaling that preserves detail, speed and sharpness, at the cost of some pretty nasty jaggies. Depending on what your TV does, how well it does it, and what your personal preference is, vWii could look "worse" than Wii over component, or it could look "better" and either one to varying degrees. The blur on a real Wii over component can be fairly dramatic, even on a lot of high end TVs, but some people prefer that. I happen to not.

A comment on this: if you have the money, running the Wii U through an Oppo unit with Darbee processing or the original Darbee standalone unit will work wonders for Wii games. It's very close to zero lag and makes Wii games look absolutely stunning. Look it up! :)

Not interested in spending extra money for "close to" zero lag when I'm already planning on building a living room PC that could run Dolphin if I want. In the meantime, vWii is using what I assume to be integer scaling, which is both the fastest and technically most accurate scaling available. If it's not to your tastes that's fine, but that's still subjective.

Oh, I don't have trouble with vWii. It's okay enough for me to play games. I just have an Oppo BDP-103D with Darbee processing and I run the Wii U through it. It makes everything, including Wii U games look a lot better. I'm not making this up. I know it sounds too good to be true, but that's exactly why it has a high cost. I've measured lag to be very controlled, it's still possible to play games in conjunction with the Wii U GamePad and have everything in sync.

Wait, you use a Blu-ray player connected to the Wii U and it makes it look better? Never heard of this method before.

Oppo products are expensive but it's also because they're damn good not just because of the brand.

Yes. Here you go: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-darbee-darblet-review

That's the original Darbee "Darblet" standalone unit that was sold. Eventually, the same Darbee tech found its way to other products, including the Oppo BDP-103D Blu-ray player that I have. It's exactly the same Darbee processor as in the original Darblet, but has a much more friendlier user interface and has a bit more refined results. It's so worth it if you can afford it. And yes, Oppo is damn good. It's a Blu-ray player second to none. If you think $600 is too much for a Blu-ray player you're absolutely right. But $600 for an Oppo Blu-ray player sounds fair. (Trying to be as unbiased as possible here. It's just one of those you have to see it to believe it kind of things. Bottom line: I'm very happy and I can say for a fact that Wii U games look much better with Darbee enabled.)

I really wish you can play Wii games with just the Gamepad. Sucks that you have to continue using a Wii Remote.. Unless I'm misinformed.

You're 100% correct, even though the Wii U GamePad could perfectly double as a Classic Controller. But hey, it's Nintendo we're talking about. :)

I just thought of something: can't Nintendo release an update or patch for Smash 4 that will render all 3rd party USB adapters, like MayFlash, useless? Is that a possibility?
