Why so? Some people like the convenience of adding from an HDD. Optical drives are prone to failure, having an alternative is nice in the long run.
yea i agree. but i just cant stand these type of guys/teams and the way they make money but yet mostly fail to provide the goods (updates like promised). cobra team have been around ps3 scene for ages they took dean (multiman) and have failed to update there ps3 hardware for a very long time which = dissapointed customers that have spent alot of money. also wiikeu team took pre-orders didnt they?? what happened to them?? its all too muggy for my likeing. also what it the difference between an ODE and UDE? they are technically the same thing arnt they? just emulate the disc drive. and worst of all NO HOMEBREW. i think cobra took along time to release a way of loading homebrew using the ODE

Hm this is interesting. In the ps3 scene, which is considered better? 3k3y or cobra ode?

Cobra has been providing much more support for their users. Since Sony released OFW 4.55 back in february, it has introduced a new verification check that made the odes not work on PS3 Super Slim models. Cobra was the team that offered a real working solution with the swap disk in march, while 3k3y only released their fix (using cobra tools), only five days before Sony releasing OFW 4.60 . Last week (06/24/2014) Sony released its new firmware 4.60 that blocks all kind of odes (Cobra, 3k3y, E3 Ode). For now, we are waiting for a fix, while they reverse engineer the new firmware to find out what sony did.

Odes are good, because they allow a Stealth method to play online, with less risks of being banned, but they are not a definitive solution, becasue firmwares updates can block them.

I think I would rather have a WiiKeyU myself. The original WiiKey has served me and still since day 1 so I feel they are more reputable! Have Cobra not had nothing but issues with the PS3 fighting updates etc.. by Sony?

Yes cobra had some problems and they are still improving their product. Several hardware versions were released and they keep offering constant firmware updates with bug fixes and new features. Cobra ode support ps1 games, ps2 games on backward compatible ps3, game dump, fast reading speeds... Of course due the nature of their product, they will face problems... Sony doesn't want to have their network being used for non original games/non legit users and they will use their arsenal to block odes.. it is a mouse and cat game...

PS3 ODEs did not need keys afaik (until 4.60).
WiikeyU stated that it needs key, so it is obtainable. Once you obtain key for your drive it is very unlikely Nintendo can block ODE on that Wii U.

Hope so... I also hope that the odes teams find a way to get the keys on newer ps3 (non downgradeables) and fix this issue with newers OFWs...

Not really. Most of "designed in China" stuff is known to be... well... poor in terms of quality. Not only that, "Europe" is not a race, it's a continent... so it can't be "racist". :P

As for the website... Comic Sans MS? Professional. :yay: I'll believe it when I see it, for now I haven't seen the Cobra UDE or the WiiKeyU, so... I'm going to shrug until I actually see the devices.
No need for moralizing, it's his console and his choice.

Racist to china, not europe.

I'm sticking to my "guns" with my original Wiikey U preorder, as I'm super impatient and this ODE has been announced for like ever. Cobra just announced their's yesterday. Unless they've been working on it ever since the Wiikey Team started on theirs and have just kept super tight lipped about it for quite some time now, I don't imagine Cobra's version will be out anytime soon.

This being said, it actually gives the Cobra Team an advantage, because they get to witness the launch of the Wiikey U along with any flaws it may have, which could lead to a superior Cobra ODE. I don't care if its UDE, its an Optical Drive Emulator (ODE) period lol. And thats what I'm call them both :P.

Things are getting exciting. I don't suppose either of these will be able to bypass region protection at all? Unless there was a recent announcement that I somehow missed or a recent leak. My japanese copy of Mario Kart 8 is burning a hole in my pocket lmao (pun intended, looking at you Team Powerup and Team Fail XD).

But seriously, I have an original japanese copy of Mario Kart 8 just sitting there, useless to me right now. I'm hoping a region bypass is available soon.... Maybe Team Wiikey or Cobra will roll out updates for their products that add this functionality. One can only hope...

If they do release updates for region bypass it will be easy for Nintendo to patch unfortunately, as it will likely be achieved through an 'on the fly' patching routine. Far too easy for Nintendo to pick up on. Oh well, I digress....

My personal feeling is that companies are holding those odes off because of the still small wii u user base (the latest numbers are around 7 million users). Take note that both cobra and k3y (wiikey) have ode for ps3 and the fact that the ps3 user base is more than 90 million, this means that they have more than 90 million possible customers (that both cobra and 3k3y (wiikey) have odes). So they want sell ps3 odes first and then for wii u.
