Well, just booted into region free emunand (didn't press L when loading profile) and start playing my retail pokemon X game on emunand 7.1
After playing, I opened the Settings app (of the emunand) and I press X to quit.
Then BSOD. It didn't quit the settings app and go back to 4.5 NAND: bricked after pressing X in settings.

I precise that I have no GW clone.
So I never used any clone firmware.
Only official GW's firmware and the region free patched FW
Region free patched launcher is not safe
Im so sorry for the loss . :(

But it seems you used something that isn't provided by Gateway, but a user-modified version...
So as far i see it, Gateway is still safe to use .

If anyone's interested, I literally just made a portable MD5 Checksum verifier for DS-MODE, if it saves at least one 3DS from being bricked, my time was not wasted.

http://gbatemp.net/threads/brick-protect-3ds-for-gw2-02b-users.360580/#post-4884288

I'm sure it's buggy at this point, but from whatever little testing I did, it correctly compares Launcher.dat's MD5 with the desired "6361c5d4935af6d888ffc0646548f5dd" value. It should warn you ahead of schedule in case any corruption occurs.

So basically developers who make tool for illegal copies, brick consoles of those who use illegal copies of their tool eh ?

Oh irony, that sure is bount to work well on the market, imagine all the people who will buy a flashcart now. Great way for nintendo to scare people against those kits.

Ha, this is a good move from gateway ( a dick move, but I like to see how this is unfolding). But I wonder if it was their intention to brick console's from people, because they are just narrowing their market and losing fans now. Couldn't it be possible that they just wanted to brick the 3dses from those cloners but the cloners got lucky, or that the code accidently bricks the system and they ment to corrypt the sd card or something?

p.s. this reminds me of DarkFader with his dsbricker, it is a d*ckmove, but they made a point

or another theory:
Gateway has the money already and got annoyed by everybody mailing them every second. So they decided to brick every 3ds so they don't have to deal with this anymore.

Like I said, this market is like the wild west. If you're scared then go legit and buy your games. Otherwise, boycott GW and buy another clone, and see where that gets you.

That shouldn't be the case, unless their code is buggy (which it no doubt is, but probably not in a way that's bad enough)
They seem to verify ALL the code *after* loading from the unreliable medium (e.g. SD card) - this check was circumvented by 3dsLink, r4 and neimmott
after that, the same code is run and once you exit system settings, they check most(?) of this code again and decide whether you deserve to live or die.
So any corruption would have to occur between those two, while their ARM9 code is in RAM

And may I ask do you have a Gateway too? I want to know how well it fits in a 3DS. If it's tough to slide in, like my DS2 which I bought back when it was over $50 on shoptemp, then it can lose contact with the system. But that too couldn't cause a brick unless a small static discharge got between the contacts of the cart and the 3DS. So far everything being said is pointing out that the launcher couldn't cause problems, but then again it's in beta.

I've had beta software do things that shouldn't have been possible to begin with. Some random interaction of code that caused my computer to crash and even corrupted a few system files. I kid you not on that. And while I'm talking about my computer, code is code, beta is beta, regardless the systems. You can make your code as safe and secure as possible, but it's only as good as you make it, and if your code is in beta, expect potentially disastrous results. No matter the system, no matter the code. And this is coming from an aspiring software developer who is learning from some of the well established developers.

The thread title bad (card?) and the content is bad. We had a post early in the thread of some psuedo code claiming Gateway have a routine that bricks your 3DS if not using official gateway firmware.

But this is bollocks - the 3rd party cards probably brick devices because of some complex device/memory management not handled correctly by the pirates.

Gateway haven't been stupid - your 3DS won't get bricked if launcher.dat is corrupted by a bad SD card in your genuine gateway card.

They claim to do a "shitload of testing", so I think you should be safe. But yeah, still a beta.
And no, I don't have a Gateway 3ds as I don't believe in piracy when it comes to Nintendo. (right now they're struggling enough thanks to the WiiU)
I do have a DSLite with DSTT though, and it fails all the time.

Good luck on your coding career, by the way! :)

Im still looking for evidence/facts/experiences/ that Gateway can cause problems for your 3DS.

Noone has said anything (or showed pictures) sustainable to proove this.

And seeing this thread making false claim it do..Is not a good thing to the modding scene.

ESpecially since Gateway is the only crew you guys have to provide homebrew to your 3DS.

We have a couple notable Scene developers saying that the code is there - Normatt, Crediar, yellows8 and neimod. I'd say it's pretty safe to assume that something's going on, lads.

Some of those are not genuine - and there's been no credible code dump - just primary school psuedo code

No, no. Every single one of those is bought off by MT-Card to slander others

No, the issue is that the modification triggered the brick code. I will say that it's apparently made in such a way that the unmodified version will never intentionally brick, but if it's modified in certain ways, it's MADE to go boom.

I guess it's a safety-precausion by Gateway to stop kids stealing their products.

And yes.. the irony with Nintendo .. :)
