The screen fades to black when you hold the power button. There's a new color to add to the Wii U's light: orange. Be careful to not pull the plug, through. (I wonder did that apply to the Wii?) Download management has a check if you can update feature.

So, when you hold the power button it basically turns Standby Mode on? And what happens if I pull the plug? (Assuming the electricity is cut or anything happens)

no, if you downloading something, it turns the light orange and when it's done, it turns to red
your data gets corrupted..?

That's what I'm asking, but in the case of installing a system update. Unless it doesn't download and install updates? Meh, nvm, it's not like we will know till the next update

i should have known i wouldn't get away scot free with that 199-9999 error code my wiiu is pretty much fucked now
since the update lego city is constantly freezing or i get the error code 150-1051 disc can't be read errors it just did this twice in a row i can't even play now

I updated without any errors. Have you try to update again? Have you unplugged and plugged the Wii u?

it says my console is up to date and i had to unplug it each time it froze. and fucking Nintendo isn't there today so i can't call them.

i've been reading up about this error looks like it's common and it is the wiiu rrod it's caused by a faulty optical drive. i knew i should have waited for the next model....

That's weird, maybe you just got a faulty unit. Weird that Nintendo isn't in. Here, they're in there 7 days a week, like 7am to 7pm.

welcome to Australia no office works on the weekends here

this update isn't faster for me the disc menu certainly isn't. when i click on it to start the screen will freeze for about 20 secs before it finally loads showing the game in!

You seem to have too many problems for it to be only related to your device. Aren't you rushing things? I went through the update and also got an error while updating. After the message it rebooted and said the gamepad needed an update, did it in less then a minute and now everything works fine and much quicker. From what you say everything seems to go wrong... as one of my brother's IT teacher use to say "85% of computer problems reside 20 cm in front of the machine"
