Hardware Updating Wii

Would I need to update my wii to run the home brew channel because i am currently on 3.1e and I don't wanna update in fear of
1, It bricking
2, Not being able to run brawl if something goes wrong

So im wondering what is the safest way to update my wii so I can still play Brawl, Use the wii shop channel and not get my wii bricked?

If you update your Wii, you will be taken to 3.3E. In doing this, no harm will be done. If you don't want to update, then don't, but it won't do anything. I'm on 3.3E with the Homebrew Channel and everything works fine. I even have a WiiKey in there too.
