Unless something has changed lately, the save dongle won't let you use somebody else's save for Mario, only your own. They changed the encryption.

Why does that matter to them?

They were probably worried about save file hacking being used like the twilight hack was. Even though you can still use other peoples OOT saves. That would be highly ironic if there was an exploit through that someday.

Did you unlock the black cubes? You can't ignore them because they transform into new leves. There's no problem entering purple cubes by the way.
Check if there is a "!" mark on any world, if there is, there might be some level you need to complete or something you forgot to do.

Entering a purple cubes or dying in some level won't make you lose a star, I've done both and got 5 shining stars ^^
