Android Sony Xperia U rooting

Alright, so I got myself a Xperia U since my insurance claim got declined and my contract is still a few more months to go.

I got gingerbread (2.3) on the Xperia U, and they keep advertising that 4.0 will be "out soon".. nothing from that yet.

I hate the slowness of this phone.. apps keep freezing and crashing :/

What can be done?
This is my first android phone and I have no clue whatsoever about rooting or anything lol.
I dont want to lose my contacts

cannot say much about rooting it but if you did your contacts are safe as they save to your google account anyway

They said the same about the Play, then they said it's not going to happen. You could try unlocking the bootloader and using a custom kernel/rom.
