I’ve seen many reports of people receiving defective modchips—some fail right after installation, while others stop working anywhere from a few days to a year later. In many cases, these defects have completely bricked the device, even after the modchip was removed. Does anyone know of a reputable seller with a strong track record of providing reliable, non-defective chips?

on the contrary,

for v1/v2 - don't get the rp2040-ns variations. instead, get the one with hwflycore or new2040plus
the rp2040-ns kinds have the almost exact pcb design BUT has sht build, and the resistors are all misplaced/clk has the rst resistors swapped out. you will get 3549 errors guaranteed.

for oled - the one with the faded silkscreen is bad, 3549 errors also and resistors are mixed up. they are from the same supplier.
get the one with OLv1 with the CATface beside the nand+3v flex fpc socket.

these are the cheap ones that work fine.

you can also get the newer instinct 2040's since the resistor arrays are far away from the apu which generally prevents issues.

Get an Instinct NX instead of an RP2040 modchip, they are a lot more reliable and stable. You are less likely to get a defective chip from those.
ehh idk if i would say they're better. i have a buddy who is constantly replacing instincts with picos because they stopped working for people. ive yet to have an issue with the rp2040 tiny. the different "picofly" chips ive tried have been hit or miss. hell i bought an instinct because i read "oh they are so much better" yet it sits in it's bag collecting dust.

i moved to the rp2040 tiny as i got sick of dealing with the others being so hit or miss. soon i'll be using my own designed pico for it. same with the mosfet, already using my own board/cables for that

I soldered 6 instinct-nx v6s and none of them had any issues. The first one was with wire, the other 5 with black flex that came with it. Last build was 9 months ago.
