It's possible to do,but it doesn't give you the advantage it did in the DS version, instead it slows you down trying to perform it.

Snaking =/= Powersliding.

Power Sliding from what I gather, you have to be turning a certain degree, and hold it for a little bit for the first blue boost to kick in. Holding it longer and moving the stick back and forth makes the red one.

Power-sliding is likely the same as snaking, but it is hard to perform. I can do it:

1. Drift in a turn
2. Directly jump again, blue fire soon
3. Jump again blue fire
4. etc.

That on non-turns is pretty useless since your a bit slower from what I've seen. But if you use it on the right points.(Like in Bowser City =3) your boss!

snaking is a skill based mechanic as anything else, watch some world record time trials for MKDD and MKDS to see what I mean. but no, being able to generate your own MT as fast as you possibly can is not in MK7, for better or worse.

The game hasn't been out very long to know everything yet, but I'm going to say the short answer is: In some places, yes. Most of the time, no.

For example, I used to 'snake' up to the mansion in Luigi mansion but found it was faster not to, since going straight ready's you to hop up the stairs. However I'm not sure whether snaking through the mud section is faster. At the moment I don't think so, but it isn't exactly slower either; if at all.

As an example, the first video I don't snake and the second I do.

The first is faster and currently a 'best known time' because it's a better strat and cleaner run, I'm still not 100% which is faster.

That's not snaking. Snaking is doing it on straight paths, which you cannot do unless the road is wide, but you slow down. Getting the bursts through turns is Power Sliding.

Powersliding is getting those drift boosts. Where you pull it off is irrelevant.
Snaking is Powersliding consecutively. And it's called "snaking" because you're constantly swerving to get the drift boosts.

Anybody else that thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

Enough said.

The word snaking is dumb. The road could be in an S-shape like at the start of Luigi Mansion, mini-turbo'ing around the corners isn't considered snaking even though your kart is MT'ing back and forth consecutively. SSMT'ing or straight stretch MT'ing is more accurate.

Do it consecutively and it becomes snaking, regardless of where you do it. It's just not sensible to snake on road bends.

And "snaking" is easier to say and understand than SSMT'ing or straight stretch MT'ing. that last one was a mouthful, so accurate or not, people stick to "snaking".
