Gaming PSN Code?

Okay, so my friend sent me this code last night, it was worth $50. So I wrote down the code then typed it in the code thingy...
It asked me if I wanted to add the funds to my wallet, and I was all like "FRICKIN HELL YEAH!", I press Yes, after a few seconds, "Funds could not be added to my wallet...." T.T

So can anybody try to help me what went wrong, or is it just a bad code?
