Bull. That's not anti competitive. Otherwise everyone would be making iOS devices or the likes. Anti competitive =/= propriety hardware. All major console makers use propriety hardware. WiiU discs, DS game carts, PSVita memory, 360 HDD, etc.

I don't personally like it, but it's not the devil..

Yes it is anticompetitive, OEM manufacturers like SanDisk were making versions of Sony's MS Duo chips back in the early 2000's, hell they were making Pro Duo chips up until the PSP Go came out, at which point they dropped making Sony chips due to their high price structure requirements. Sony never allowed 3rd parties to undercut their hardware. The hilarious thing is that Sony continues to put out overpriced cards that are already a dead format rather then just doing what everyone else is doing. Even Nintendo adopted SD and SDHC memory cards over trying to sell their own thing because it costs too much to manufacture and market flash memory at a higher price point in order to make a profit. The worst part about the Vita memory cards is that they are slow as hell, SDXC would have been a better option in the long run since it has a larger storage capability of up to 1TB.

not being a Sony defender(that's foxi4sony work) but they implemented a proprietary memory card to protect the system from hackers. one of the main issues of the PSP was that you can copy anything anywhere thus giving full access to what the PSP can read, while with the Vita content manager and proprietary memories you are limited to only copy signed files aside from inoffensive music, photos and videos.
now talking about the price drop, I think that should have happened before I bought mine :tpi:

good thing is that now my friends don't have the excuse of being too expensive to avoid buy one.

You do know that the PSP and PSP Go both had proprietary Memory Stick slots right? And that has nothing to do with preventing hackers, making a good secure system will prevent hackers. Nintendo has already proven that and it took more then a few years for the PS3 to be hacked. The Vita has not been hacked and the 3DS hacks are a joke right now. Nintendo did not choose to use a proprietary memory format either, it's just Sony trying to nickel and dime the fuck out of players.

Bull, again it is not anti-competitive. And Sony is like any company where it is to make money, not a donation facility.

Anti-competitive means it hurts competition, how does proprietary memory card hurt competition? It doesn't. According to you, proprietary software also counts as anti-competitive.

Memory stick is pricy because it is invented and licensed by Sony. Lexar, Sandisk, and other manufacturers have to pay license fee to Sony if they want to manufacture MS Duo. Same thing with SD card to SD card association and CF card to Sandisk. Plus I have yet to see SDXC with 1TB, unless you are talking about theoretical max limit. But then Memory stick beats SDXC, since Memory stick has theoretical max limit of 2TB.

SD card is cheaper for three reasons,

* More widely used, hence manufacturer can afford lower profit margin, knowing it will make that up via higher sales figure.
* SD card association is composed of many NAND/memory card manufacturers, so a portion of license fee can be recovered.
* SD card is simpler, have less features. Making it easier to produce.
