Nintendo: don't expect a 99-cent Mario game.

I think Nintendo are probably staying away from the mobile scene mainly because they have their own handheld device. Sure they'd get revenue from people buying their app...but not buying their console to play it on? Now what's the point in that.
Plus a lot of App games out there have a lot to be desired. I'd much prefer to pay £30 for a 3DS game and know it'll last me hours and actually be fun.

A smart phone would be an awesome platform for original 2D mario. I would love to play it on there.

I do not know about others but sliding my hands around a somewhat less responsive/easy to manipulate touchscreen vs even a NES pad.

Now I do hold phones and tablets could support an awfully large percentage of classic games and gameplay styles many others would/seemingly have dismissed, but at the levels most people still playing Mario are playing Mario and at some of the levels the game affords being played not a chance; I do not know if I can quite compare it to the ports of classic sonic on similar platforms but would be my intention if I carried this further. I have seen what might be dubbed twitch gameplay (those games where you are running along and need to turn corners and taptap among others) but I hold Mario would have to be tweaked so as to be almost unrecognisable.

I wouldn't mind a 99 cent Super Mario Bros port to iOS... would buy that!
this game never, ever gets old! it's my childhood favorite...
