It should be possible. You probably would want to put a larger cap over the existing button base, rather than trying to replace the bases, which have specific notches in to hold the buttons in place in the case (the small and XL models have different notches as well as different button diameters).

You would need the wider cap to be thin enough that it doesn’t hit the case when the button is pressed. You could probably sand down the bottom of a larger button and the top of the current one and glue them - this is what JordiPower did to make SFC-coloured joycon buttons:

However, the new buttons would end up closer together, unless you glued the caps off-centre. Which should be possible if your glue is strong enough that it doesn’t come apart when you press the centre of the big button (which would be to one side of the original smaller one).

You'd have to open the hardware to physically change it. I thought about changing the thumb stick for an analog stick, but it's perfectly fine the way it is.

Yes, you need to open the case (unless you're happy sanding down the buttons from outside the case, which would make sure they're reduced to the right level…). It's not too bad on the n3DS XL - the ABXY buttons are on a separate board that is quite straightforward to remove.

Replacing the Circle Pad with something larger would mean you couldn't close the system. Since the rubber cover came off the Circle Pad on my o3DS some years ago, I use plastic covers like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cyber-・P...ircle+pad&qid=1581072079&s=videogames&sr=1-29 - better grip, gets less sweaty.

I wouldn't mind not closing.. but it's unnecessary to replace it.

You know, I purchased one of those things similar for the Switch Pro Controller and they were great. Might buy for the 3DS, but from a seller whether in U.K., U.S., Spain, France or whatever but not China.

In the images I compare the 3ds xl and wii u gamepad buttons, I think this mod is possible! And Think the 3ds XL buttons are too little!!
