I need a Free Program that converts

I want to convert some movies to put on my iPod Touch.
Thanks for any suggestions. I can't find any, and if I do find one, it either doesn't work, sucks, or is a "Trial" version.

I am so not familiar with encoding for ipods but if you want MP4 and do not mind a something a bit more involved (i.e. using avisynth to input a video):
