Homebrew HDD crashing a lot

I have an external HDD with it's own power supply but it still often freezes games, so that I have disconnect the wii u power cord. Maybe it's not relying on the external power when it's connected to the wii u (Like it's rather taking power from the wii u than it's own power supply)? If this is the case, is there a way I can fix that, like a setting or something? Or is my HDD just old or broken?

Either it is not supplying enough amp that the drive needs or the drive is dying.
