I found yet another usb cable there which is also in usb 3 was used and works for the moment, however the ones I had were new in any case it solved the problem with this cable which is however identical but longer
Sounds like the HDD peaks at (almost) 1 A, so what two ports of the Wii U are able to deliver. Cheap cables might have a too high internal resistance for this... Glad it works for you but my suggestion is to externally power the drive in the long run.
