Do we need "next-gen" consoles?

What can consoles do that computers can't?
Lock you into a single market environment and brick your hardware if you look at it funny.

Simplicity. I'm tired at the end of the day, I put a cartridge in and start playing before bed. A bit slower for discs if you need to install them but you get the point.

Of course physical media is a huge reason too for me personally.
How is your PC that's always on running torrents, hooked up to a TV nearby a couch and a BT controller/MKB less simple than a console, with the added benefit of having ALL games but Mario and Gran Turismo staring at you ready to go? Older consoles? For example - I have my HDD-modded PS2 and by god if I'd bother taking a dvd out of a case from a shelf to fire up the same game I have on that HDD with dozens of others.

Even if I did theoretically have such a PC, where's the cartridges? Or the Blu-Rays? I don't like playing games I don't own, which is the entire premise of Steam i.e. most PC games. Piracy may be a thing but it can't beat a physical game for me. And I have too many trust issues to keep anything running all day with an internet connection lol. Not to mention the PC needs me to put in work other than clicking "Buy Now" on Amazon.

the PS5 is like 6 years old
The heck do you mean that system is already six years old??? It felt ilke yesterday for when the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S released. The fact that we're already almost two years of the Switch 2 is also wild to see. I do NOT think that we're ready for a new generation of systems. It'll probably be AI integration for the new things

Not happening. If anything things are going to get worse now that people are using AI and lying about it until they get caught.
Well, less so because of AI, and moreso to push h/w sales. Modern day corpos with ALL their lessons learned over the years, will NOT miss any chances to upsell you shit you don't need while simultaneously taking a huge load and pay off of the devs. I have a 1070 mobile that doesn't support DLSSucks, so when something like that Indiana Jones game comes out that requires it I end up with a choice to make, and saving $300-800 is always the choice over $70/free thing I just won't get to experience for a few more years.

Honestly, I feel like PS5 really had nothing but GT7, that didn't even come out at launch, to make it enticing like older systems did. Everything's been homonogizing in the past 10 years and especially in the past 5. I'll never stop saying that owning Sony before was about their long-fizzled-out exclusives, Gran Turismo, and Monster Hunter (though only in Japanese while big N held the west by the tails on their inferior hardware). Patapon finally got ported last year. If Loco Roco comes to PC I'll have a heart attack of joy. Who knows, maybe PC will c Little Big Planet port or something as well.

ALL major fighting games already migrated to PC, and t'was a huge chunk of reasons to own consoles before. And as I wrote earlier - emulation of the golden era of consoles is already here and hopefully ps3 compatibility will only increase in the next few years.

I cant wait for the "AI" crash. i'm so sick and tired of "AI" everywhere. Yes this DL/LLM are incredible at some jobs, but the rest like image and video slop is useless.

If the big next gen feature is "AI" i'm migrating to whatever platform that does not include "AI".

I already ditched MicroSlop Windows partially because of "AI".

Only difference now is more performance and more AI. More and more games take advantage of higher specs to rush out the release rather than demonstrate what can be done with that. I can't think of anything PS5 generation lacks; it has fast storage, plenty of power, enough to even allow for 4K resolution in some games, and a pretty advanced (if unreliable) controller.

It just burns my ass thinking that when a new gen console comes out, game devs have to push games to their limits from the get!
If game devs would just respect the machine, we wouldnt have to have new gen consoles every 5-8 years!
I dont see any point releasing a system and games that play 97% without issues!
But I digress, it isnt about the machine and games, its about stupid people falling into this vicious cycle while they rob you blind and overcharge and resell games most of the damn time, but STUPID people keep purchasing these things!
