I already have a slim but have been wanting to buy a fat model due to my physical library and sony's disk pairing shenanigans, and found a broken one for $250. Description says its was dropped and doesn't turn on anymore, only lights up once. Is it worth trying to fix? They're getting rarer where I live and $700 is the asking price for a new one. Used it's $550-600.

I'm probably going to take it to sony if I can’t repair it myself, but it should still be cheaper, I think. Fwiw, I think a ribbon cable or something got torn but not entirely sure.

Thoughts?

All depends on the damage done. Motherboard photos and what not too. Gamble at the end of the day. I would recommend hold out for a similiar priced one that has an easier fix.

Single beep/light could be a variety of things, we most commonly see them for board issues. Could be APU, as noted, which most of the time just isn't fixable at all. Unless you've got microsoldering experience, don't bother buying this. It's almost never going to be a simple flex.

Sony will charge you minimum $200 for a fix, so you're likely better off trying to find a good used deal on one.

I will also highlight you can not just pay Sony this generation, while that used to be a viable option, if it’s out of warranty or opened they simply will not service it.
