Welcome to the 48th issue of the GBAtemp Recommends Revival Project! This project is a weekly feature where we share our favorite games and applications with you. The things we recommend may be "old school" titles, a Homebrew, a ROM hack, sleeper hits, an application, etc, but one thing's for certain, we think they are fantastic and deserve your attention!

Everyday Shooter

This week in GBAtemp Recommends we take a look at Everyday Shooter, a quirky top-down shmup developed independently by Jonathan Mak, along with some collaboration with Shaw-Han Liem on the soundtrack. Sony became interested in the game at the 2007 Independent Gaming Festival where it won awards for design innovation and excellence in audio. First released for PS3 then later for the PSP via the Playstation Store, and also for the PC via Steam.

The concept of Everyday Shooter is nice and basic. Destroy everything in your path while attempting to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge enemies. The obliterated baddies leave behind collectable points that can be used for various upgrades and lots of unlockables, such as increased number of starting lives, shuffle mode, and quite a few graphic alternates.

I personally enjoy the simplistic art style and beauteous visuals of the game, but what really sets this shooter apart from others of its genre is the audio. In place of the usual noisy blips, explosions, and sounds of destruction, Everyday Shooter instead incorporates a creative use of guitar notes and riffs that musically mesh with the background soundtrack to create an always different jam session song every time you play. The eight levels are meant to play through like an album, where each of the individual 'tracks' are unique. Some of the arena's even pay tribute to old school classics like Robotron, Centepede and Time Pilot.

While this game can be a bit frustrating with its initial difficulty, it does get easier as you obtain and unlock the different upgrades. So, if you like a challenge and are looking for something a little bit different then I definitely recommend Everyday Shooter.
