    3DNUS, and variations of it, will never work since Nintendo took down all of the files. But you don't need to update your sysNAND, just get an emuNAND and install the old browser to use AR codes. If you're still crashing with emuNAND + old browser, then you may need to check your codes.

    Just started a new game and it's all fixed, showing me all my available characters rather than a random assortment of 18-19. My old saves were corrupt in some way, I've had the avatar completely randomize in appearance and details when playing on another 3DS a while back.
