UGREEN Nexode RG 30w & 65W Fast Charger (Hardware)
Official GBAtemp Review
Product Information:
Launching today is UGREEN’s latest GaN fast charger: the Nexode RG. Coming in two models with either 30W or 65W output, this accessory packs a unique robot-inspired design (RG is short for Robot GaN).
On the official Amazon page, the 30W Nexode RG retails for $26 while the 65W Nexode RG retails for $50.
The 30W model comes in either black or light purple (which features a back ribbon) colour while the 65W model comes only in black. Whichever model you choose, they will inevitably strike you as adorable gadgets with their robot looks. They are the cutest chargers I’ve ever seen and definitely help them stand out of the pack of mundane chargers.
Their feet are also magnetic covers for the pins. In addition to adding to the overall robot look, the covers are also welcome as an added layer of protection.
While they bear similar aesthetics, the 30W model is significantly lighter than the 65W model. This is due to the maximum power output they can each deliver and notably, the 30W model has only one USB-C charging port. I found this to be quite limiting, and having at least a USB-A port would have made this model more versatile.
If you’re looking for a more versatile charger, then the 65W model might be more appropriate. It features two USB-C ports and a USB-A port, each with different maximum power output. The top-most USB-C can deliver a maximum of 65W while for the second USB-C it’s 30W, and the USB-A port can deliver a maximum output of 22.3W.
When plugged in, the LED display of the RG charger will also power on, giving the robot facial expressions. These correspond to the charging status (device connected or not, charging/fully charged).
In addition to supplementing the overall robot character of the Nexode RG, the display is a handy way to check if your device has finished charging, without the need to toggle the power button from the device itself. However, depending on your power socket, the display might be obstructed. For instance, the Nexode RG tested fits Chinese sockets but with an adapter for UK socket, the LED display is top-facing instead of front-facing. I hope that UGREEN issues Nexode RG of different plug types to be more adequate based on the region.
That said, if you decide to get one, it will be a safe and reliable charger to use. UGREEN has designed the Nexode RG with safeguards from short circuit, overload as well as overheating. The number of ports might be limiting but it can be an adequate companion on your travels. In addition, both models packs UGREEN’s premium craftsmanship and are sturdy.
I am particularly fond of the 65W variant as it is a relatively compact fast charger. With multiple ports and up to 65W power output, it can also charge several demanding devices at once such as a tablet and a handheld gaming PC.
Whether this charger can be recommended will be up to your preferences and needs. If you’re searching for a unique-looking charger, then this is definitely the most unique-looking one I’ve come across. It can also be an original gift idea for the tech user in your life. The robot aspect is purely for cosmetic purposes but the charging indicator is quite handy. Maybe in the next iteration, UGREEN could go one step further with the RG charger and integrate a ChatGPT function to make it even more robot-like?
