No, most seem to be HD these days.

old anime maybe, but not newer ones

ALL airing anime are made in 480p originally and aired in either that or upscaled. The "480, 720, 1080" versions you see are original and upscales, that's why there's literally no difference between them if you look at them side to side. Old anime used to be 360p by the way, like One Piece up to episode 618, meaning not really that many years ago...

Also, anime are REMADE for DVD releases which is when they are made over in higher resolutions rather than upscales, but aired anime is ALWAYS at 480p unless it's a movie (movies are 720p when aired and 1080p when there's a DVD release).

480p cuts costs and production time, so it's best for the weekly releases and it's redone when it's worth it (eg: got famous so it gets DVD release), BUT NTSC TV in Japan airs in 1080p.

Do you have any sources for this information? It seems like an interesting topic

My sources come from various places (most are from pirating communities though so can't really post, but they are "horrible" at what they are doing:P). Crunchyroll and those companies, get copies of the ORIGINAL to provide to people rather than recorded versions of it, that's why 480p always goes up first unless it's a movie or a weird channel/airing hour. Btw, fun fact, 99% of all hentai are made in 360p...

I'm pretty sure they don't animate it in 480p link source

@ThoD False. FMA:B was aired in at least 720p, I guarantee it. You can easily tell the difference.

FMA:B was 480p when airing as it aired in the 576p broadcasting era, so it was literally pointless to make it 720p for the airing. The DVD RELEASE was 720p and then again 1080p Blu-Ray release. What you see currently on streaming sites comes from the DVD release, reason 480p and 720p are different is because 480p is original and 720p is from remade DVD one.

No, HD broadcasting had been a thing for a while. I started watching the fansub while it was still airing and it was definitely at least 720p. It was far smoother than Naruto.

again if you're gonna make claims link your sources.

As I said, my sources come from PIRATING COMMUNITIES, reason I can't exactly post links or anything, but even gave an obvious tell as to what one of them is. Also, go on ANY fansub site the moment an episode is released and see in what order they become available, almost always it's the 480p because that's the RAW from Simulcasts

and those get the actual thing that's airing from the production company, then that's taken and subbed. THEN it's converted to the higher resolutions but SOME shows air in 720p or 1080p (Persona 5 for whatever reason for example airs in 1080p). I used to typeset for WhyNot (almost dead so ok to mention I guess) and that's how the process is done.

@ThoD According to this most TV Anime are above 720p. Even going back to 2011 they are 720p.
http://anibin.blogspot.com

Most Anime nowadays is scanned at least 720p. Sometimes not higher then 720p to save memory space. Old Anime was at 480p. But some studies that still have original assets can scan at higher resolutions for HD re-releases. But most don't because costs and instead upscale.

I don't really watch that much Anime myself so I wouldn't know if the resolution on shows looks low or not. But 720p is standard now because shows nowadays are more detailed.

The link you posted, after going through it, refers to the resolutions of the images, not the actual resolution of the video. What I mean by that is that it refers to the panning imagery shown in anime (hardly anything ever moves in anime scenes besides the camera paning over a huge image). That's what MOST of the comments on cropping are about, although it does talk about how the video is bigger in resolution.
