If you're using the latest release, make sure you have Reinand.dat on the root of your SD card, and the firmware.bin from the pastebin (in the readme.md) in the rei folder. 3.x doesn't require you to press start anymore.
Yeah. If you need sysNAND stuff you might want to look into Aurora Wright's mod (or just use minipasta).
