Limited Run Games... Always heard bad things about them and even though I do my research, I still don't understand why they're universally hated. What makes this port of DOOM better than the SNES original, however?
Well the original dev Randy Linden worked on it. He restored the cut levels, doubled the framerate from 10 fps to 20fps, gave us circle-strafing, and we got episode 4: Thy Flesh Consumed. There's more I'm sure I'm missing, but it's an incredible re-port to the SNES.
Yeah, he's incredible. It's so tempting to open them and try them out, but I also want to keep them pristine. More than half of my DOOM games in my collection are sealed.
Very wise words there. There's no other choice if it exists at one place that gets heavily criticised, and some just simply move on and ignore it since it doesn't concern them. I have no hate against anyone for buying what they love, and if you enjoy it, I'm pleased about that. But if it's somebody promoting a scam, then it's the total opposite.
Yep, I watched a video on the new Doom SNES with the emulated FX chip last year which came in a translucent case, and I'm impressed with the improved performance over the original. It's such a huge difference that isn't slow like a snail's pace.
Fun fact: The photo of the PCB has level translators so there's no risk with damage to the console. The FX chip is handled by a RP2350 microcontroller, even including the USB port and BOOTSEL and RESET buttons, so it has an advantage of being upgradeable.
I'm kind of impressed it's not one of the carts that has extra pins on either side, considering all the other FX games do. I also didn't expect it to basically be a flash able dev board with USB C on it. Looks like possibly JTAG on the bottom right as well?
Edit:
Oh, I see... The buttons and USB port are all part of the Pico Pi on board, now it makes sense.
