I don't know who's buying a 1440p monitor to game in 4K lol. Either way, usually those TVs on the cheaper end have a response time that's a good chunk worse amongst other things, along with being bundled with a bunch of smart apps that try to recoup some money for the manufacturer by selling your info. I like monitors, they just work with no faff and no random end user agreements.

The TVs can cut a lot of corners because in the TV market, most people just want big screen that looks fine at as low a price as possible. Gaming monitors do likely have an element of "gamer tax" added on, but they do also push out better numbers in things like refresh rate, response times, features like FSR etc.

I don't know either. My best guess is that TVs are sold in such huge volumes that they're able to sell them cheaper.
It's hard to even find a monitor that can do 1000 nits HDR and high refresh rate 4K for much under $1000. 1080p monitors meanwhile are commodity products, you can get high refresh rate ones for almost nothing, but they don't have proper HDR.

Now 4K and passable HDR is a standard feature on even the cheapest TVs but in PC land you have to pay a premium for those. Doesn't really make sense.

I don't think people really care about a slight difference in nits, they buy a series x knowing it can do 2160p and I rarely ever see people hook them up to gaming monitors. This is an average console gamer VS pc enthusiast thing though. Most just don't care as much as you think.

It's not a slight difference, 400 nits is not HDR and shouldn't even be allowed to be called HDR. People do care, they just don't know the difference. We watched something in HDR on my mom's TV and she kept complaining that the image was bad. Because she got ripped off and bought the most entry level 4K TV that was already years out of date for twice what it was worth.

To the average consumer they'll save $200 and just see the picture being just as good.

400 nits and no local dimming completely trashes HDR to the point where SDR is actually better.

It's like the gamer chair thing when a normal office chair is cheaper and better and won't look like a racecar seat, or the rgb led accessories that cost 3x more because they glow in the colours of the rainbow.
And don't get me started on audiophile snake oil lol

Tbf I've had a standard office chair for the past five years that's done service well. Haven't seen a reason for a fancy over priced gamer chair.

I have like $1k of audio gear in the chain of my turntable -> AVR/phono receiver -> DAC -> headphones only to end up listening over bluetooth, audiophiles would hang me lmfao
