How would you say the ARM compares to other mainstream processors like AMD or Intel in-terms of performance-wise?

Hard to say, it's not like I'm pushing it with gaming or anything. No problems running CLion on it and playing with/compiling Pokemon Emerald though. Obviously no issues with Obsidian for writing or just general browsing either.

All of those have native ARM apps too, so the battery life is fantastic. 8+ hours with no problems, and a sleep mode that's actually great. Also super quiet, doesn't get that hot, and a surprisingly good camera.
