I know a lot of us think the past tense of "lead" (as in 'lead a horse to water') is "lead", when it's actually "led".
For some nonsensical reason, this one has led a lot of English users astray.

Oh, and "conversation" and "conservation" are almost identical too - just flip the 's' and 'v' around. Not a lot of people get this one confused...because they're not as frequently used...but it's still interesting, I think.

Yep...English is complete nonsense. Lead and read are completely different words with different rules, despite looking and sounding almost exactly the same.
Lead -> led, read -> read (probably because "red" is a colour? I dunno).
