I haven't got FF7 Rebirth, but from what I've seen? Yeah, Squeenix did screw up this whole "remake" thing. With Rebirth, they really couldn't decide if they wanted Aerith to die or not, constantly teasing survival and death, to the point her death really doesn't have the punch it does on PS1 (and ports).

Plus, since Sephiroth was seen throughout Remake, and was the final boss you had to beat in it, he lost a lot of the 'mystery' surrounding him that he had on PS1, and the 'unbeatable' reputation. Making him playable in the flashback was stupid too, and he can now DIE during it, which makes no sense...

I have no idea how FF7R 3 could possibly fix all this, if it even can. Just...ugh.

At this point, I'm in the "should've been faithful remake" camp.

Last one: Barret. There was a segment in the original where a bunch of people are killed by a guy with a gun-arm, and everything points to Barret. It's not made clear it was his daughter's original father until a while later, but until then Barret looks guilty as sin.
Rebirth screws this up too, by spoiling it too early.

This is a really unpopular take but I'm pretty anti-remake in general.
The remake didn't stand the test of time, the original did. Making a replacement for newer generations to play is almost always a spit in the face to the legacy of the original game.
I'm sure there are good remakes out there, but it's a shame that people are playing the remake and honestly thinking that they've experienced FF7
