Most likely a failure of the DVD laser. The tray ejects fine, loads a disc fine, spins up... slows down... spins up... slows down, repeats for 3 minutes until it just says "drive empty." I can't find any DVD lasers for the drive online anywhere, but I can find plenty of replacement drives.. FOR $80 US.
