If the thing started out in the nerfed state (i.e. nerfed during initial development, and us end-users never learn about that internal testing and nerfing), then all fine because that element of "great once, not anymore" never came into play.

Instead of nerfing overpowered things, by reducing their stats or reducing their variety of options or whatever, why not buff underpowered content instead? Make previously-useless things worth using, thereby increasing overall enjoyment?

Please explain the difference. Example: Some sword deals way too much damage and has the attribute "holy" doubling the damage on many enemies.
Reducing the power of said sword would have the same effect as increasing enemy hitpoints and taking away holy weakness from some enemies (but would maybe affect other weapons as well).
What to do if some aspect turns out to be totally unbalanced?

I'm honestly asking, as I have no idea how to deal with such stuff.
See, I'm stuck at old games before getting updates was a thing and never used any online gaming function.
It is just a feeling that an overpowered weapon/armor/spell/whatever could potentially ruin multiplayer experience, just like a cheat left in due to an oversight.
