Is there a way to get tabs in File Explorer, or is Apple still way ahead of Microsoft in that regard (not needing to open multiple separate windows to access multiple folders at once)?

@RichardTheKing well, you have two (unofficial options:
use files,which is a from the ground up new file explorer featuring way more than just tabs, and a huge redesign. if that's too much for you than you can use qttabbar which just adds tabs to default file explorer
