Customization, accessibility and in some cases anonymity (cfw on emunand). Always preferred CFW to even Modified OFW because there's usually a lot more baked in.
I also don't understand the point of emulating consoles on other consoles. Well, in case of handhelds I can understand it (you can take it anywhere), but why emulating a console on another home console?
Well, I'd prefer original hardware for retro titles. However, prices for secondhand games are outrageous at this time and are currently only going up. So, buying an N64 or Dreamcast is more out of reach for me than it was even 5 years ago. Another upside is having easier access to multiple console games on one platform.
No argument there. However, it's more cost effective to hunt down.. let's say.. a Series S console (pretty good for emulation) and sideload emulators on that. The PC market is up in the air, especially with GPU pricing.
I use a laptop with... actually quite bad specs compared to some PCs out there, but it runs many emus excellently (Citra can be a hit or miss depending on the game, but most of the time works as supposed)
I get why people aim for best specs for their machines, but sometimes really, the "worse" ones can perform quite well too if you set the emulator up properly
Comparatively speaking? My last point still stands. A laptop isn't a bad option, but we're still talking more expensive than the Series S in most cases. Also, there's far more people who would rather have something just work than take the time to set it up.
Granted, if we're talking options? THere are cheaper Android boxes and even some SBCs you can buy that will handle emulation up until the PS1/N64 era fairly well. Even as far as DS/PSP for the handheld generations.
Checking the prices in Poland (given it's my current PoR, I can quickly check the prices here rather than in Taiwan), Series S is a hit or a miss with prices. My laptop costed me around 1800PLN (Series S costing 1300-1400PLN average), but then again - Series S will be used solely for gaming, whereas I can use my laptop for my paid gigs or many other things the console won't do.
I'm very far off from being a PC master race believer, just saying getting a laptop isn't that bad of an option for some people. Neither will I convince anyone, just being genuinely confused as to why people emulate consoles on consoles.
