How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

As someone who is personally against the use of AI especially in creative works, I think the most important part here is disclosure. Any project that explicitly states whether it uses AI or not should have that mentioned in the article; and I think there should be a way of disclosing when a project is reasonably suspected of using AI with solid evidence (I don’t think it’s fair to throw accusations around in that regard).

I also think that there should be distinctions between whether some or a majority of the code is AI generated and whether or not game assets / art / music are generated.

I appreciate having this open forum for everyone to voice their opinions on the subject; I think it’s very important for all sides to be taken into consideration with how projects are reported on going forward.
are you at all worried about the sanity or the amount of time wasted or unnecessary pressure put on devs by people who are against AI who "react way too emotionally" to the beyond where they lost all sense of reasoning? Are you at all worried that this may lead to some people sending developers "death threats" which people who are against AI have done. I am referring to the "clinically insane" ones not you people who have the ability to keep yourselves together.

Except it's not "by default". Don't pretend that there aren't dozens of reasons to condemn AI use. Also the whole "AI is inevitable" is pure marketing by big corporations. It is entirely possible to not use LLMs/GenAI and there will always be people that don't use it. Please don't be like "omg this is the future, you guys must accept!!". It's not like that at all.
PISS! lol

It is not.

Calling it 'pure corporate marketing' is just a complete cope.

Anyone who actually writes code or works on projects knows for a fact how useful these tools have become for debugging and speeding things up.

This whole crusade against LLMs just shows that you don't actually build anything yourself. Sure, you can stubbornly avoid them to feel morally superior on a forum, but pretending people aren't quietly using them to ship code faster is pure delusion.

This isn't about the future, it's happening right now.

they won't be able to listen to reason all you can do is just simply disregard the opinions of anti AI people and be rude to them because thats how they treat common sense.

I know a lot of people who have been hurt by generative AI, especially when it comes to the arts. While I am conscious of the environmental effects of AI assisted coding, I am more concerned with its use outside of coding. If something uses generated assets for art, music, etc, then I personally want nothing to do with it, and I would feel really gross if someone lied or intentionally withheld the fact that a project used this.

The topic is hot for a reason, and I think transparency is key. Saying that only the vocal minority of users feel this way is really diminishing, especially when 90% of the community is silent. I dont talk much here, but I wanted to weigh in as one of those 'silent members'.

I'm against high component prices, high electricity prices and datacenter pollution.

Whats the point in coding an app if you code it in a way that prices your users out of a computer?

I'm OK with locally run AI as it's much less destructive, as long as it's only an aid and a human is still using their brain.

so you don't care if devs get harrassed because they were forced to disclose AI? You should see it as a privilege and an honor that they even chose to give you the time of day and here we are acting like we are so entitled that they should be forced to disclose it. I find that very mindset toxic and its gonna lead to some people outsourcing their assets so that way they can find loop holes to not have to disclose out out of fear that they might get harassed.

I think its interesting that so far when I call it out most who oppose it don't acknowledge that people in their group do harass devs. that seems to really show that they utilize the disclosure so that they can and they just won't tell you and you don't find out until developer drama implodes over twitter for no reason like with NTE that shit never had to happen.

That's an... interesting take. I shouldn't have to see it as a privilege and an honor. They're trying to sell ME a product, I deserve to know what's in it.

see you don't have to like AI but you should as a human being respect the sanity and the time of the devs they are human too. and if they are forced to disclose it people will use this against them and that wastes time.

ok how about this. just ignore the fact that their trying to sell you a product. you don't have to like AI thats fine I dont give a fuck. my passion lies against the overwhelmingly almost cult like insane strong stance against AI and that is very dangerous.

So much this.

Most of the "vibe coders" are taking hours out of their own lives to build and share things for you for free.

They're just trying to share something cool or help out the community, and instead of a simple 'thanks,' they have to deal with people demanding transparency audits and acting like they owe the internet a full disclosure report.

It's wild.

in speaking of that you make a great point there. so, you take a kid who makes a scribble and they show it to their parents and all that kid wants is oh thats a nice drawing honey even tho the drawing sucks ass right? the same thing! so imagine your in the position of a person who uses ai because you don't care and you're trying to make something cool and all you get is ai bad. now that doesn't make you feel very good does it?

I will respect someone's sanity if they respect their own.

No they're not, they're delegating to a datacenter that's hoarding all the silicon.

I sure as hell ain't thankful that I can't afford to add more storage to my server. What's this "for free" you speak of?

There are no 'Groups'. I don't support AI, I don't harass devs. You're taking everything I'm saying as if I speak for everyone that is anti-AI. I'm giving my thoughts as an individual and you're being extremely hostile.

Harassed? By disclosing AI usage? It's the bare minimum my friend.

I am one of those silent people. I have this account for more than 10 years, and even though I don't post very much, this website is very precious to me. I came here on this thread to make my stand because people like me that really don't like generative AI exist in this community and we should be vocal about it if possible.

If someone wants to use generative AI for their projects, go ahead. But the bare minimum is to disclose the AI usage. It's honestly baffling to me that someone thinks that AI disclosure is a kind of harassment. Disclosure is actually respecting other people's ability to choose what they want to consume. And I, as well as many other people out there, don't want to consume generative AI content.

There’s a reason why people like how Joel Haver makes live action footage look like a cartoon & why people didn’t like Corridor Crew replicating an existing artist’s style.

Personally, I wish the “technology” would die a fiery death because as we know, give any tech industry an inch and they’ll go a mile. But maybe that’s the romantic illustrator in me speaking. And the part of me remembering that games costing thousands of dollars to get a character started with horse armor.

As James Sterling said about asset flips, “There’s a difference between an early build with a ton of potential, and a stitched-together joke built on a foundation of crap.”
Likewise, there’s a difference between a programmer knowing what it is & using it as such; a highly advanced autocomplete with ample opportunity for further growth (GameNative, ClusterTune, the recent BOTW 3DS demake), and a slapdash gold rush attempt that puts more effort into showing off the articles it’s gotten on gaming news sites & donation pages while giving little back to the open-source space (Gen1 & Mischief Makers “””recomps”””, ThunderPass).

alright. I am just gonna be real with you you may not do this behavior and if you don't thats respectable. but I had to leave twitter because I have seen anti ai people saying the most heinous shit! and it was very toxic. so thats why i left. now, I am pretty chill usually however when it comes to this topic I feel like I must throw a wrench in it because I know I will say things that the people who voice their opinions the most on this won't agree with and I have been blocked and banned by places over my opinions and I think I am more empathetic here. because I have seen the bullying they do and how fast they cave but let me tell you. they do not hold those opinions themselves. they don't cave because they agree with you. They cave because they're just trying to get the loudest screamers off their ass. and this is how nice things get ruined. mean while they could have been left alone to finish what they are working on but instead they may have gotten death threats in their emails or who knows what have you. but like I said if you dont do this thats respectable behavior.

ngl, I imagine the amish have it pretty good I wonder how healthy their sanity levels are at.

So where exactly does "disclosure" end and the public shaming begin?

Because throughout this thread, people aren't merely saying "I'd like to know." They're openly saying AI-assisted projects shouldn't be given space, shouldn't be covered, and shouldn't be supported.

At that point, demanding that every hobbyist wear an "AI USED HERE" badge isn't just about informed choice anymore. You're creating a convenient label so people can blacklist, dogpile, and morally judge developers based on the tools they used rather than the quality of what they actually made.

Call it disclosure if you want. When the stated purpose is to identify which projects deserve to be avoided, condemned, or excluded, it starts looking an awful lot like a witch hunt.
