Rockstar Games releases statement regarding recent GTA VI leaks

Since August 18th an online persona going by Cyberleek have been releasing gameplay clips of Rockstar Games upcoming GTA VI. The leaks appear to be from an internal playable build, though the age of development for the shown footage is unknown, with some reports estimating it to be between 1~2 years old.

The leaks, which we won't be sharing here for legal reasons have shown a substantial amount of actual gameplay; which since the original 2022 leaks have been the only look at gameplay we've seen so far. Rockstar has remained extremely tight lipped about the game and besides Trailers 1 & 2 have shown very little of the game which has been in development since 2014.

Today Rockstar have finally released a statement regarding these leaks. The team behind the game are apparently heartbroken and disapointed to see the game revealed ahead of it's scheduled Netflix exclusive "extended look" which premieres tomorrow August 27th at 3pm ET on Netflix and 9pm ET on YouTube (UK times: 8pm - Netflix, 2am - YouTube).

Dear all,
We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has — from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.

We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.

We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week — your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.
We look forward to sharing more with you soon.

What do you think? Are leaks like these simply inevitable for a project of this scale? Or has Rockstar been too restrictive with what it has shown, drip feeding their fans for more than a decade? Has this approach inadvertently fanned the flame for leaks like this to happen?

"this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time" well yeah, you intended us to see scripted, edited footage rendered on your machines and enhanced in post-production, instead of raw unedited gameplay footage from an average user's gaming setup, because you wanted people to preorder blind. We know.

If their apology to the community was in anyway genuine, then they wouldn't subpoena the community just for being in a discord server they have no idea if Cyberleek was in, nor would they paywall the reveal behind Netflix, among other things.

There's been a lot of negative discourse around GTA 6, but I've seen a lot of positivity around what has leaked. They chose to apologize for the one thing that offended absolutely noone.

I'd like to see them apologize for wasting the justice system's resources over a video game while people who trafficked, raped and murdered children are still at large.

If Saint's Row was allowed to continue existing as a franchise, I literally wouldn't have any reason to give any brain power to be aware of or care about GTA anymore.

It's not an exaggeration when I say I didn't realize how bored I was with GTA 4, until I first got to play Saint's Row 2.

But because GTA fanboys (and plants from Rockstar and Take two) couldn't leave well enough alone, it's Saint's Row that dies while GTA gets to get away with sucking harder than caseoh at any given buffet. Duke nukem has to lounge in purgatory while we get 9+ doom games and like three new Quake games. Shit's fucked.
 
Screw it, I'll throw my $0.02 in here rather than on Reddit or something.

This statement really bugs me since it feels like Rockstar's managment team (which I'll shorthand to Rockstar for the rest of this) wants to have it both ways. They claim that they wanted the game to be shown in a curated manner, but they (temporarily) paywalled that manner behind a Netflix subscription. They claimed that they needed everything to be ready, yet they clearly have enough ready to give the people everything that they're looking for. They say that they want to show things ASAP, yet they've taken months to show even the earliest form of gameplay.

Rockstar needs to figure out whether they want GTAVI to be a work of art or a consumer product, and they need to do it yesterday. If it's a product, then sure, drip-feeding fans to maintain hype, creating deluxe edition bundles, going digital-only, and doing all of the other anti-consumer things that they've done makes perfect sense. If it's the work of art that statements like this make it out to be though, then they need to come to terms with the fact that they aren't treating it like one. They need to acknowledge that art gets its prestige, in part. from the impact that it has on large swaths of people over long periods of time. Hype cycles, pay-to-view trailers, and pre-release shenanigans won't matter 40 or 50 years from now, but a compelling experience that gets in the hands of the people that want it just might.

As it stands though, they want to have their cake and eat it too. If you need evidence of that, look only to the fact that this statement is effectively just another ad for the Netflix trailer and the game itself. If you ask me, I would argue that they have nobody to blame but themselves for this mess.

P.S. I find it rich that Rockstar's management team suddenly cares about their staff's feelings when they themselves are infamous for (allegedly) tacitly endorsing or even promoting crunch culture. It really feels like they're standing up for their employees only when it's a means to an end.

It seems like a waste of government resources just to go after a leaker who is under anonymity and could never be tracked if they've got good opsec. Rockstar should just accept that it leaked instead of making excuses like any corporate entity; if it makes huge publicity, then they should learn from the criticisms that people say, and try to improve upon that for the game rather than go all Nintendo.

Also, Netflix exclusive? Wtf are they trying to achieve?
 
I may feel bad for the devs, but that's because of their work conditions, not because of the leak. No sympathy for the executives who are trying to spin this in a sympathetic way though.

It'll actually only be exclusive for a few hours and will be released on YouTube after the fact, it's all a stupid ploy from Rockstar and Netflix to scrounge up a few subscriptions from idiots who can't wait.
