Pokemblem is the best spin off Game Freak never made
The Pokemon series is known for its vast assortment of spin off titles, with the majority being well-received. We've had an assortment of Mystery Dungeon titles, a handful of stylus-oriented Ranger games, and even a few trips to the pinball table. What was my favourite though? Pokemon Conquest. One of the weirder spin offs, it combined Koei Tecmo's Nobunaga's Ambition series with the familiar creatures for a brilliantly unique strategy RPG. But what if we took that one step further? What if we took Pokemon and threw them into the game engine of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones? Well we'd have Pokemblem.
Now this isn't actually a new ROM hack. According to its PokeCommunity post, the hack dates back to 2021, though somehow completely fell through the cracks for me. Spotting a fresh update today, I decided to give it a go and was very much not disappointed. The general flow of gameplay swaps between moving across a familiar Kanto overworld and battling in Fire Emblem-style turn based combat. Each Pokemon has their own set of growths and will randomly gain stats on level up based on these growths. As you level up you'll gain new moves and evolve as you'd expect, with battles being swung with familiar type match ups and attacks.
