Pokemon Platinum PC port gets a surprise release

platpc.jpg

Seemingly out of nowhere a PC port for Pokemon Platinum has surfaced online, bundled alongside the source code for those interested in building and developing it for themselves. The game in its current state appears to be fully playable with only minor graphical bugs noticed in my few minutes of playing, not requiring any kind of ROM or additional setup to get started.

The readme file in the source code download outlines a full list of features:

Feature List said:
  • Graphics
    • Internal resolution of the 3D graphics can be increased throught the config file. By default this is 10x.
    • A 60fps patch is enabled by default with some speed fixes, though some things will still be double speed
    • There may be some graphical issues with the 3D
    • Screen layout can be adjusted through the config file or IMGUI
  • Audio
  • Touchscreen (simulated with mouse)
  • Both the PC port and the NDS ROM can be built and debugged from the same source tree
  • Playing the game from start to finish
  • Poketch
  • Battle frontier
  • Contests
  • Debug features (this build by deafault has PM_DEBUG turned on)
  • IMGUI (press TAB)
  • Saving
    • The save file is just the raw data that would be written through SDK backup APIs, and is currently not compatible with emulators.
  • Local multiplayer over LAN or internet (press tab and select NET in the IMGUI)
    • Union Room
    • Underground
    • Local multiplayer is over port 2009. You can port forward or use a VPN like hamachi to play over the internet
  • Some WiFi features (WiFi plaza, WiFi club, GTS is only partially supported and has bugs)
    • Voice chat (libVCT) is NOT supported
    • By deafault, the Poke Classic DNS is used. You can go to the wifi settings from the main menu of the game to change to whatever DNS you want.
    • In my testing, I was able to trade and battle with a real DS using the WiFi club but it is very finnicky and can be difficult to get both devices to connect to each other

The port is available to download via Archive.org for both Windows and Linux users, though with me not being certain where it stands in terms of larger legality and it including all of the original game's assets, I won't be providing the link. In line with the site's rules, I'd ask people refrain from sharing or requesting such links in the comments below.

No shit it will, it's not even reliant on the original ROM to be usable like every other PC port made from a decomp with there being prebuilt copies next to the source code, so it's going to be killed real fast once it gets traction.

Edit: just poking through the files of the source code shows that the DS' SDK was seemingly used in doing this, it's turbo fucked if Nintendo's laywers see it
That's why it went IMMEDIATELY in my Google Drive.

I hope people are archiving all of the files, I would love to see more ports from this

Drive has hit people’s files with DMCA notices, make sure you use more than just Drive to keep your files (especially these ones) safe

Making PC ports like this via leaked source is a real dumb move for the sake of the community. Makes modding and contributions basically impossible to do in a clean way. Unverifiable mods with questionable security risks are very easy to distribute when there's no clean-room way to develop or distribute this. If only they used their efforts to help develop the decompilation than this. People will eat this up like slop either way, it is what it is lol

They do that on me, I’ll sue their ass. And cancel my membership. I’m already in the process of closing one of my Drives already and putting its contents on my external. A cloud drive is supposed to be private storage for my use. They want to violate that, I’ll sue them into oblivion and take action.

Will you? The ToS leave very clear to not use their service for piracy, what this shit is (a recompiation based on stolen code and using original assets) is exactly that, and the fact that it was built using stolen assets makes it a huge red flag.

Ok, but you should know that things doesn't work like that in the real world.

If you want full control over your backupd content, get a cheapo second hand mini-PC, plug a pendrive on it and make yourself a homemade cloud server, because this shit is going to be taken down so hard.

They're about to start......

Uhhh, but I like having to require the ROM of the game that I want to play the PC port of!

I know that I said that I wish for people that make the DMCA joke can get penalized in this forum earlier, but isn't this part of a grey area in legal terms?

Normal recompilations are safe precisely because they require the roms, this one comes with all the assets, so it's full on piracy and yes, it's going to be DMCA'd to oblivion. It's not a joke, it's reality.

Yes I will. Because unless I decide to share it (which I’m not stupid enough to do from my private drive as I’d use another service), my files are private and not for them to look at.
"Your honor, I put in something taken from something that was leaked and not legally usable and did not actually belong to me and based off of said leaked and not legally usable and did not belong to me in thier cloud storage and they deleted it from me and they shouldn't be allowed to because they shouldn't be allowed to, give me $10 million dollars."

Why are people like this?

Best way to start the article, i opened the home page and was also kinda like "what the fuck?" this is so awesome though!

though i'm curious to know how they'll handle wifi features since that uses data within the console and the save file
to function, i presume that they'd make so you can use the platforms wi fi? though changing the DNS might be an entire
different can of worms for some devices not on PC

(edit nvm i re read the post the features section didnt load for some reason the first go round)

Awww, and it's one of the only Pokemon games that I played and enjoyed :(
I couuuuuld try it out on the Steam Deck since there's Linux support, but I'd rather do that with my own copy used as the base(recomp style~).

Just know there won't likely be any fluff or added features to this pc port with most developers refusing to touch this with a 10-foot poll. You might get some vibe-coded garbage released on sketchy websites though, so cheers to that lol

I'd never trust anyone, not even family, with my unencrypted files on their drives.
And that's not only a matter of privacy, but integrity and availability.
just use Kopia, Restic or something just as secure for it.

Also, use Hetzner Storage boxes if you want online access @ 98%+ availability.

Even those are services subjected to their companies' will, if you ever think you own an actual cloud storage unit, you actually dont, the only way is to create your own network storage.
