I had an old switch unused for a few years so this morning i dragged and dropped the HATS github directories into my sd card and let them overwrite the old directories

Im assuming that doing this would just update everything including the sigpatches

then the error code showed up 2168-002

looking around the threads and online i think peoples general advice is to remove the atmostphere/contents folder with the "flags"

however that did not change the problem

Any advice? thanks

Most homebrew apps also need to be updated to the HATS version you are using.
Also, sometimes Windows merges the new files with the old files and you might have some older modules or config files being used with your newer HATS installation.
Just rename the bootloader/switch/atmosphere folders and copy over your HATS folders.
You do need to take a look at the config files.
If you manually edited them, than review whether the settings are still valid.

This is likely the answer, i shared this problem on reddit and explained that i used a new HATS pack on an old/current SD card im still using... i mistakenly used HATS because everyone told me i needed to update my firmware and sigpatches

So i assumed that this was my solution to use HATS

However now that i did that my switch cannot open any homebrew tool or launcher. It immediately crashes the switch and exits into Hekate

So now i can choose to use my old games but i cannot add new ones.

Do you have any advice for me on what to do next?

Using a HATS release is no problem, it's just Hekate/Atmosphere/Tools/Sigpatches all bundled into 1 for your convenience.
It also makes sure that you have all the right versions of the homebrew apps.
But old stuff like module and configuration files on your SD card can break it.

Just move all files and folder from your SD card into a new folder, except the 'Nintendo' folder.
If you have a file based emummc, leave the 'emuMMC' as is.
The copy over all your HATS files.
Last thing to do is to setup your configuration file so you can use your emummc that you create before.
Then you should be able to open the album folder and access the homebrew apps.

Can you explain this a little bit more simpler, because i overthink alot and can misunderstand what you say easily

1a) Do you want me to archive everything into a new folder but keep it on the SD card? (except for the emuMMC and Nintendo folders?)

1b) Or do you want me to delete the folder from the SD card?

2) Ok so after that I can copy over all the HATS files

3) How do i setup a configuration file and where do i place it?
